Nicolas Cage Says He’s “Homeless” After Sinkhole Destroys Malibu House

Watch: Nicolas Cage’s $10.5 Million Malibu Mansion Nearly Collapses Into Growing Sinkhole

Nicolas Cage is leaving Malibu—for now.

Nearly two months after a massive sinkhole caused major damage to his $10.5 million mansion in California, the Leaving Las Vegas actor shared an update on his current living situation.

“I’m currently a little bit homeless,” Cage said during a Los Angeles Comic Con panel on Oct. 31. “Something happened to my house in Malibu, so I’m just sort of living in hotels.”

That’s why his Halloween plans with 4-year-old daughter August, who he shares with wife Riko Shibata, looked a little different this year.

“I don’t have normal trick-or-treaters that I would like to enjoy tonight,” explained Cage, who’s also dad to sons Weston, 35, and Kal-El, 21, from prior relationships. “I’ll take my daughter out trick-or-treating somewhere in Santa Monica, but I am going to watch a movie where the director was actually nominated for Worst Director at the Razzies—called The Shining.”

The Oscar winner added of the Stanley Kubrick classic, “He directed the hell out of that movie. I’m going to watch that tonight. After I put my daughter to bed, I’m going to put on The Shining.”

Cage’s beachfront property was one of the many houses affected by a sinkhole that opened up in September, leading local officials to declare an emergency and issue evacuation orders for residents from over 30 homes in the Malibu area.

The sinkhole—which roughly measured 60 feet wide and 25 feet deep—collapsed Cage’s deck and destroyed his driveway, as well as caused a temporary gas leak in the neighborhood.

The National Treasure star had purchased the 4,000 square-foot property in 2024, 15 years after a government-placed tax lien on his real-estate holdings led to him unloading five of his homes—including a 28-room castle in Germany.

“Due to the difficult economic situation, unfortunately, I was no longer able to keep it,” Cage said of his Bavarian fortress in a 2009 interview with German publication Bunte. “Even if Neidstein Castle is no longer in my possession, it will always have a firm place in my memory.”
