Watch: Hunter Schafer Shares Why She Decided to Undergo Gender-Affirming Bottom Surgery
Kim Petras wants to take a detour from these reactions.
After Euphoria star Hunter Schafer shared that she made the decision to undergo gender-affirming bottom surgery, the “Unholy” singer came to her defense after seeing some negative reactions online.
“Reading some really weird ass s–t on here about beautiful Hunter Schaffer [sic] talking about getting vaginoplasty,” Petras wrote on X Oct. 19. “And just wanna say it’s so brave of her to speak on this and it’s exposing so many of the gross ways in which trans women get fetishized.”
She continued, “The idea of someone aligning their body with how they feel on the inside and people saying YOU ARE WORTH LESS TO US NOW is what I wrote a song called brutalist about.”
Indeed, the 34-year-old included the track “Brutalist” on her 2026 album Detour, chronicling a time in her life when her father would drive her to meet with psychologists around Germany as she began her own transition. Her father—an architect—would point out interesting buildings along the way, with Petras recalling one brutalist building in particular that got torn down and replaced by a modern-looking apartment building.
“My dad would always complain that they tore down something beautiful,” she told V Magazine in 2025. “And a lot of the time, I think about how people criticize being an openly trans artist—when you talk about it, people say, ‘You’re ruining your beautiful body that God gave you.’”
“So I compared it to that building,” she explained, “something that used to be there, that was beautiful, and then they tore it down and ruined it.”

As for Schafer, the 27-year-old shared that she underwent surgery in December—almost 13 years after she began transitioning at age 14—and was extremely happy with her choice, although it took her a while to make the decision.
“For a long time I’ve embraced the gender-expansive part of myself,” she toldElle in an interview published Oct. 19, “and I really wanted to try to make that previous body work, because I thought there was something really cool and badass about it.”
And the Mother Mary actress was grateful that the ability to change and evolve is so central to the LGBTQ+ community.
“I feel like that’s the magical thing about queerness,” she mused. “On an ideological level, it’s about possibility and expansion and growth, and being on that journey and finding yourself.”
