NEW YORK – Several Yankees are dealing with, what is believed to be, a case of food poisoning “or some kind of bug” according to manager Aaron Boone – an issue that has altered some of Wednesday’s lineup.
Hours before today’s series finale against the Detroit Tigers, “I woke up to a lot of messages about overnight stuff with a number of guys,” Boone said, referring to the condition of his players, some of whom required IVs.

“It’s been an interesting week on a lot of fronts,” said Boone. “Hopefully as the day unfolds, we’ve got everyone available.”
Boone wouldn’t go down the list of players feeling ill, but notably Spencer Jones is not in the lineup against a right-handed starter, and Ryan McMahon has been scratched from his scheduled minor league rehab start tonight.
McMahon was confirmed to be one of the players who was taken ill.
Boone anticipates that McMahon (throat infection) and Trent Grisham (hamstring strain) will be activated for Friday’s series opener against the Minnesota Twins.

Jazz Chisholm Jr. has returned to the Yanks’ lineup, after sitting out Tuesday’s game due to an outfield collision with Jasson Dominguez. Chisholm passed concussion protocol and informed Boone that he was ready to go.
Here is the Yankees’ lineup for Wednesday afternoon:
-
Jasson Dominguez, RF
-
Jazz Chisholm Jr., 2B
-
Jose Caballero, CF
Anthony Volpe’s ninth-inning single Tuesday proved insignificant, except for avoiding another dubious franchise low during a woeful offensive stretch.
In their previous four games, the Yankees had collected exactly three hits in each game.
They were being two-hit by Tarik Skubal and the Tigers until Tuesday’s ninth inning, when a catchable pop fly single and Volpe’s sharp, two-out single gave them four hits in a 9-3 loss – the Yanks’ sixth straight defeat.

According to ESPN’s research, the Yanks thus avoided being MLB’s first club since 1900 with three-or-fewer hits in five straight games.
“This week’s been pretty crappy,’’ said Yankees manager Aaron Boone, whose club will attempt to snap a season-high six-game losing streak on a sweltering hot Bronx afternoon.
It’ll be Will Warren (7-3, 3.75 ERA) for the Yanks, coming off a five-run, 5.2-inning loss last Friday at Boston.
Detroit counters with fellow right-hander Troy Melton (4-1, 2.39 ERA), trying to complete a three-game sweep.
