Watch: Why Tom Hanks’ Son Chet Hanks Is Living in a Nashville Trailer Park
Chet Hanks is running point from a trailer park in Nashville.
The 35-year-old son of Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson has been living out of a Jayco Eagle RV after moving to the Tennessee capital to pursue a career in country music with his band Something Out West.
“I didn’t want to get an apartment because I literally just got a condo in L.A. and I furnished it,” Chet explained to The Tonight Show host Jimmy Fallon during his April 28 appearance. “I didn’t want to do that again, and I didn’t want to furnish it.”
Though he initially stayed at rental homes and hotels, the arrangement got “really old.” Chet ultimately opted for an RV after crashing in an Airstream during a trip to Northern California. As he put it, the mobile home had “everything you need.”
“I just like having my own space,” Chet continued. “I got my kitchen. I got a walk-in shower—that’s a big deal in trailers.”
Another big deal? The community he’s been able to build at his new home. In fact, the Running Point actor has discovered that trailer parks don’t live up to its “sketchy” stereotype.
“I’m probably the youngest person in the trailer park by 30 or 40 years,” he quipped, calling his neighbors “great people.”
Chet added, “It’s all just retirees.”
And the move to Nashville has definitely paid off. After all, Chet recently played at country music festival Stagecoach, where his dad was inthe crowd to cheer him on.

As seen in videos circulating on social media, Tom, 68—also dad to Colin Hanks, 48, E.A. Hanks, 43, and Truman Hanks, 30—bopped along with fellow concertgoers bopped along with the crowd while Chet and his bandmate Drew Arthur performed “You Better Run.”
“It was a big deal,” Chet said of the set on The Tonight Show. “It was only our second performance ever, so I’m trying to play catch-up. I was nervous.”
