Watch: Met Gala 2026 Dress Code Revealed
Fashion’s biggest night is rapidly approaching.
Indeed, Hollywood’s best dressed stars are set to arrive at the 2026 Met Gala dripping in style May 4—aka the first Monday in May. Ahead of the event co-chaired by Beyoncé, Nicole Kidman, Venus Williams and Anna Wintour, unzip the reason behind the event’s now-iconic calendar slot.
The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s annual fundraising event for its Costume Institute hasn’t always fallen on the first Monday in May. After all, though the lavish gala has been held since 1948, the tradition of its now-iconic date only started 21 years ago.
While the event was held in late April between 2001 and 2004, perhaps the most evident date change occurred in 2000. In fact, before the turn of the century, fashion’s biggest night typically took place in late November or early December.
It all started with the 1999 event, when the exhibit on Coco Chanel was canceled following the death of the Met’s chief curator Richard Martin that November, with the museum telling The New York Times the following year that it was “impossible” for the Costume Institute to curate an exhibit in time for their usual date.
Following the cancellation, the organization opted to hold an exhibition in honor of former first lady Jacqueline Kennedy in 2001 from May 1—a Tuesday—until July 29, marking the beginning of the event’s beloved springtime slot.
It wasn’t until 2005 that the institute implemented the first Monday in May date, which is when the Met held their “Celebrating Chanel”-themed event.

Though the first Monday in the fifth month of the calendar year has become synonymous with the event, the date has proved to be flexible. After all, the celebration was completely canceled in 2002 following the 9/11 attacks and moved to September due to the COVID-19 pandemic in 2021.
But for 2026, the tradition is in full swing as celebs are expected to bring their A-game for the “Costume Art”-themed soirée. And this year’s dress code “Fashion Is Art” encourages Met Gala attendees to consider how a designer uses their body as a “blank canvas.”
“What connects every curatorial department and what connects every single gallery in the museum is fashion, or the dressed body,” Andrew Bolton, the curator in charge of the Costume Institute, said in a statement about the theme, per Vogue. “It’s the common thread throughout the whole museum, which is really what the initial idea for the exhibition was.”
