Watch: Hunter Schafer Shares Why She Decided to Undergo Gender-Affirming Bottom Surgery
Hunter Schafer is feeling more embodied than ever.
The Euphoria actress recently decided to share a personal update with the world, one she’d otherwise kept private for almost a year.
“I just had bottom surgery in December,” Schafer told Elle in an interview published Oct. 19, “which was amazing, and I love it so much.”
For the 27-year-old, who began transitioning at age 14, the decision to undergo the gender-affirming operation was one she came to slowly.
“For a long time I’ve embraced the gender-expansive part of myself,” she explained, “and I really wanted to try to make that previous body work, because I thought there was something really cool and badass about it.”
These days her identity feels “flatter,” with her noting, “I’m a woman. I’m a girl.”
But that ability to change and evolve is one of the elements of being LGBTQ+ Schafer is most grateful for.
“I feel like that’s the magical thing about queerness,” she said. “On an ideological level, it’s about possibility and expansion and growth, and being on that journey and finding yourself.”
In fact, Schafer admitted she’s wrestled with queerness in the ideological sense “versus how it applies and works in real life, in the context of the world that we’re living in.”
She added, “I feel like there’s always a tension there.”

But that internal wrestling is part of why she decided to publicly share she had her bottom surgery, telling Elle, “Maybe it’s a good thing to share, for the tension I was talking about between those two worlds.”
As she recovered from the surgery, Schafer was limited to only 150 steps a day, meaning her loved ones came and visited her at home. While the Cuckoo star enjoyed the company, she’s also more than happy to be on her own.
As she put it, “There are so many thoughts to think.”
But while Schafer doesn’t mind being in her own head, she also loved being able to let loose in her body on the set of Blade Runner 2099, which she stars in alongside Michelle Yeoh. It was the first time she’d dipped her toe in the world of action, and Schafer took to it like a duck to water.
“The reason I like action so much is you don’t have to think that much,” Schafer explained. “It’s just being in your body.”
