In general, we believe that denim has its place all year round, but we’ll admit that fall — when the air is a little bit crisper and you’re happy to wear long pants again — is definitely the best season to embrace it. And while we love brands such as Agolde, Frame and Mother, there are also plenty of Canadian denim labels worth knowing. From classic jeans to more directional, trend-led cuts, here are five denim pieces from homegrown brands, all worth adding to your rotation this season.

A Canadian brand that’s both nostalgic and cool, Silver Jeans has its origins in Winnipeg through Western Glove Works, the 1921 company founded by the Silver family that is, today, the oldest privately held denim producer in North America. They launched their namesake denim brand in 1991 and are still going strong today, with both classic and fashion-forward styles such as these Avery Trouser Leg jeans. Cut with a highrise and a contoured waistband that prevents gaping, they’re finished with a wide-hemmed trouser leg that sits sharply over boots, sneakers and loafers alike.

BESTIE MAEKAKE DOBBY JEAN
Article content
Montreal-based Naked & Famous Denim has been making its denim since 2008, taking raw Japanese denim, then cutting and sewing it here in Canada. The Bestie is their barrel leg, which features a slimmer, subtler leg than what we’ve been seeing the past few seasons, and are reimagined here in Maekake Dobby, a lighter, 12-ounce version of the dense woven aprons traditionally worn by sake merchants. They’re designed for denim connoisseurs and anyone who appreciates craft — and they look great, too.

EMILY SLIM JEANS / SOLSTICE
Article content
Yoga Jeans was founded by Montreal brothers Eric and Jacob Wazana, whose obsession with creating comfortable, lived-in denim began with Eric’s childhood habit of meticulously breaking in his new jeans with bottle caps, sandpaper and even the sidewalk outside. The Solstice — also called the Emily Slim — carries that comfort-first philosophy into a slim-fit, highrise silhouette made from their “travel denim,” which is stretchy but also keeps its shape, all daylong.

DENIM FORUM THE ARLO HI-RISE STRAIGHT JEAN
Article content
For all the barrel-leg, printed, coloured jeans we love, there’s also something to be said for a pair of classic blues. The Arlo could be considered the forever jean by Denim Forum, Aritzia’s in-house denim label: Highrise, straight-leg, and finished at the ankle for an easy, unfussy silhouette that will stand the test of time. Cut from soft, midweight denim with the tiniest touch of stretch, the colour 5 Yrs Kiss N Tell Bleu is also made with 92 per cent certified regenerative cotton, sourced from an Italian mill. A pair for the ages.
