As Thursday morning, Sept. 10, Oak Street is closed to traffic between West 10th and West 12th avenues.

West 10th Avenue and West 12th Avenue will remain open.

The Oak Street closure is in place 24 hours a day with a scheduled reopening of Sept. 22. The City of Vancouver said in a notice that access to residences, businesses and hospital and health services will be maintained.

However, police will be directing traffic and drivers should watch for detours and abide by no-parking and no-stopping signs in the area.

“Those travelling through the area should expect delays,” the city warned. “If you are visiting Vancouver General Hospital or other facilities within the 10th Avenue health precinct, please plan an alternate route and allow extra travel time.”

Drivers: Oak will be fully closed for two blocks. Cross streets will remain open, with occasional closures. Expect detours and parking restrictions until the end of the project. Information on road closures is available at vancouver.ca.

Cyclists: The West 10th Avenue bikeway will stay open, but travel with caution and follow signs.

Walking: Sidewalks on Oak Street will remain open with some intermittent closures.

VGH is in the early stages of a huge redevelopment of its health facilities and campus on West 12th Avenue, including new towers of up to 24 storeys to replace the hospital’s aging infrastructure.
