Watch: Love Island USA Drops Contestant Vasana Montgomery Over Alleged Use of N-Word
Love Island is nothing if not a well-oiled machine.
With the original U.K. version’s 13th season underway and season eight of the U.S. version premiering June 2 on Peacock, fans and Islanders alike know what to expect by now.
Well, at least they know they’re going to a villa in Fiji (vicariously, for those watching at home) and host Ariana Madix will be waiting.
What happens after the initial coupling up ceremony—when first impressions set the stage for all the uncoupling, competing, conniving, canoodling and recoupling to come—is what viewers keep showing up for, six nights a week.
Suffice it to say, while the crew has it down, editing footage daily so whatever just happened in the villa is unfolding on your screens hours later, minus on Wednesdays, people can be unpredictable.
“We have an idea, but these are real human beings who want to find love,” Love Island USA executive producer Bernie Schaeffer told The Hollywood Reporter about what goes into the casting process. “We don’t know how their connections are going to be.”

Or what the Internet is going to dig up once the cast is announced.
Vasana Montgomery‘s journey ended days before it was supposed to begin, with the 25-year-old business owner from Beaverton, Ore.—as identified in her cast bio—getting removed from the show after videos allegedly showing her using a racial slur started circulating on social media.

So, season eight didn’t even have to premiere before the first bombshell showed up.
Yet, as Schaeffer noted (before Vasana was booted), anything “can change at the last minute” and the production pivots as necessary.
As for how the sausage gets made behind the scenes, it really does take a village to keep the Islanders safe, well-fed (they eat more than breakfast), tanned, glam, not too drunk and equipped for whatever challenges get thrown their way.
