Watch: Love Island USA Drops Contestant Vasana Montgomery Over Alleged Use of N-Word
It’s not all love for this Islander.
Sean Reifel—a 29-year-old from Bethlehem, Pa.—quit his job as a police officer after less than a year on the force in order to join the season eight cast of Love Island USA, according to local officials. Now his resignation has drawn criticism from the city’s police chief and mayor, who spoke out against the reality star ahead of the June 2 premiere on Peacock.
“Our police department spent a lot of time training,” Bethlehem Mayor J. William Reynolds explained on May 29, per local outlet WHTM. “We paid thousands of taxpayer dollars to send him to the police academy. We are disappointed he left as we now have another vacancy in our department that is impossible to fill until next year.”
Reynolds continued, “I never thought I’d see the day in America where reality show participation wins out over being a police officer.”
The dating show contestant’s former boss, Police Chief Michelle Kott—who was there when Reifel was sworn in by Reynolds in August 2025—echoed similar sentiments of frustration over the resignation.
“I love Sean, he’s a good guy, he was a great officer, but I’m disappointed,” Kott said as reported by local outlet The Morning Call on May 30, elaborating on the reason why Reifel’s departure was “extremely difficult.”
“We work so incredibly hard to try to recruit the best people we can to be part of the Bethlehem Police Department,” Kott said, adding that recruiting officers has become essential due to “manpower issues that we were experiencing on patrol as well as our vice unit.”

As for why he couldn’t just take a leave of absence to film in Fiji this summer? Kott said she’d be unlikely to grant the request.
“At this time, I don’t think there’d be a department that would be willing to allow someone to leave for ‘x’ amount of weeks to go on a television show when everyone’s hurting right now and overtime is being utilized to fill those gaps,” Kott explained. “Officers are getting burnt out. It’s just a bad look to me.”
While Reifel has said goodbye to his job in law enforcement, he’s still introducing himself to Peacock viewers as a cop.

“I’m not a model, I’m not an actor, I’m a police officer actually.” Reifel noted in the trailer, while showing off his upper body strength by walking on his hands. “You could be having the worst day of your life, and I’ll just help you sift through that.”
Reifel also shared what he’s looking for in a future match. As he put it, “The more thoughtful you are, I think that s–t’s so pretty. I love it.”
