    Watch: Britney Spears Enters Treatment Facility One Month After DUI Arrest

    Britney Spears‘ life no longer resembles the circus it once was. But all the fans who bought tickets to the show three decades ago remain on the edge of their seat when it comes to finding out what happens next.

    The 44-year-old is due to be arraigned May 4 on a misdemeanor charge of driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol, though the Ventura County District Attorney’s Office noted she does not have to appear in person.

    Following her March 4 arrest on suspicion of DUI, Spears checked into a treatment facility last month, the latest twist in a complicated saga that did not conclude when she was released from a conservatorship in November 2021—as so many who championed that outcome hoped it would.

    Calling the incident “completely inexcusable,” a rep for Spears told E! News at the time, “Britney is going to take the right steps and comply with the law and hopefully this can be the first step in long-overdue change that needs to occur in Britney’s life.”

    The new chapter also promised to include more time with her kids, Sean Preston Federline, 20, and Jayden James Federline, 19, who she shares with ex-husband Kevin Federline.

    “Her boys are going to be spending time with her,” the rep continued. “Her loved ones are going to come up with an overdue needed plan to set her up for success for her well-being.”

    Britney Spears Enters Treatment Facility One Month After DUI Arrest

    While she never returned to performing after canceling her smash-hit Las Vegas residency in 2019—”People have no idea the awful things that were done to me personally…and after what I’ve been through, I’m scared of people and the business!!!!” she wrote in a characteristically jaw-dropping 2021 Instagram post. “Not doing my music anymore is my way of saying ‘F–k You’ in a sense”—Spears remained on the world stage after successfully petitioning to be put back in charge of her own affairs.

    She married longtime love Sam Asghari in August 2022, but they broke up a year later and eventually divorced. She released a best-selling memoir, The Woman in Me, in 2023, eagerly declaring life to be “a beautiful clean slate from here.” But the past came back to haunt her last year in the form of Federline’s book You Thought You Knew, which delved into her at-times rocky relationship with their sons.

    “The constant gaslighting from ex-husband is extremely hurtful and exhausting,” Spears wrote on X Oct. 15. “I have always pleaded and screamed to have a life with my boys. Relationships with teenage boys is complex.”

    Her rep said at the time, “All she cares about are her kids, Sean Preston and Jayden James, and their well-being during this sensationalism. She detailed her journey in her memoir.”

    But Spears’ current bond with her boys appears to be getting stronger. While Sean and Jayden moved to Hawaii with their dad in the summer of 2023, both still under 18 then and therefore minors in his care, Jayden started seeing his mom more last year and she has spent time with both of her sons since her arrest.

    But Spears’ healing journey since being freed from her 13-year conservatorship remains a work in progress. She wrote in her 2023 book, “Freedom means that I get to be as beautifully imperfect as everyone else. And freedom means the ability, and the right, to search for joy, in my own way, on my own terms.”

    Britney Spears Celebrates the End of Her Conservatorship”Good God I love my fans so much it’s crazy !!!” Britney Spears wrote on Instagram after her conservatorship was terminated on Nov. 12, 2021. “I think I’m gonna cry the rest of the day !!!! Best day ever.”She wasn’t in court for the big moment, but had been awaiting the expected good news from home with then-fiancé Sam Asghari.

    Tensions Heighten Between Britney Spears and Jamie Lynn SpearsBritney heatedly took issue with Jamie Lynn Spears‘ bombshell memoir Things I Should Have Said (and the press she was doing along with it), accusing her little sister of trying to sell a book at her expense.Jamie Lynn said “my behavior was out of control,” Britney—after unfollowing her sibling on Instagram—wrote Jan. 13, 2022, referring to comments the younger Spears made on Good Morning America. “She was never around me much 15 years ago at that time ….     Britney Spears Weathers a Major DisappointmentOn April 11, 2022, Britney shared on Instagram that she was pregnant with her and Sam’s first child together.”I mean this should have happened three years ago to be honest with you,” Sam said in a BBC interview that was conducted before the baby announcement and published April 12. “When you’re in a relationship with someone that you’re truly in love with, you want to re-create, and so this is something I want to do.”Sadly, the couple said in a joint statement May 14 that they had lost their “miracle baby.”

    Britney Spears and Sam Asghari Get MarriedSam and Britney tied the knot on June 9, 2022, in an intimate ceremony at their L.A.-area home.Selena Gomez, Madonna, Drew Barrymore and Paris Hilton were among the guests.     Kevin Federline Speaks Out About His Kids With Britney SpearsKevin Federline told ITV in an August 2022 interview that Sean and Jayden chose not to attend their mom’s wedding and “have decided they are not seeing her right now,” nor had they seen her for “a few months.”Britney’s ex said the boys distanced themselves from her in part due to the NSFW photos of herself she would post on Instagram. “I try to explain to them, ‘Look, maybe that’s just another way she tries to express herself,'” Kevin said. “But that doesn’t take away from the fact of what it does to them. It’s tough.”Britney responded after excerpts from the then-yet-to-air interview were published. “It saddens me to hear that my ex husband has decided to discuss the relationship between me and my children,” she wrote.     Sam Asghari Responds to Speculation About Britney Spears’ Well-BeingIn January 2023, TMZ obtained a video of Britney sitting at a restaurant table seemingly talking to herself and a report circulated that she’d had a meltdown at the establishment and Sam had angrily left.”People get a little too excited to see my wife,” Sam told a paparazzo afterward, per video posted by TMZ.” When you sit down to have a meal and people get their cameras out and start filming, it’s disrespectful.” So, Britney may have been acting strangely to observers, according to Sam, but that’s because she was frustrated by the perceived intrusions. (He also explained that he had simply gone ahead to get the car.)Later that month, Ventura County Sheriff’s deputies showed up at Britney’s house for a welfare check “out of an abundance of caution” after a number of her fans called to report their concerns because she had (temporarily) deleted her Instagram account, a sheriff’s office spokesperson told People. He said that authorities quickly determined Britney was “safe and in no danger.”
    Britney Spears Slams Reports That She’s StrugglingBritney wrote Feb. 9, 2023, on Instagram that the most dire speculation about her well-being made her “sick to [her] stomach.””No folks, it’s not 2007 … it’s 2023 and I’m making my first homemade lasagna at home !!!” she shared. “I finally got my fireplace to work in my living room !!!     Britney Spears’ Sons Move to Hawaii With Kevin FederlineBritney’s attorney communicated to Kevin’s lawyer in a May 31, 2023, letter that the singer wouldn’t oppose Sean and Jayden’s move to Hawaii with their dad, stepmom Victoria Prince and stepsisters, and the Federlines relocated in early August.Months later, Page Six reported that Kevin’s lawyer said Britney had talked to the boys “probably a couple of weeks ago,” but wasn’t sure if they had spoken since the move.

    Britney Spears and Sam Asghari Break UpMonths after swatting down split rumors sparked when Britney vacationed without her husband and Sam was spotted sans wedding ring (he was bare-handed while filming, his rep clarified), the pair broke up after 14 months of marriage.”They’re separated and it’s best for Britney,” a source familiar to the situation told NBC News. Sam filed for divorce Aug. 16, 2023, citing irreconcilable differences as the reason, per court documents obtained by E! News. Sam’s rep denied a report that he was challenging their prenuptial agreement and threatening to exploit Britney with videos. “All these claims are false, as no negative intention has ever been directed towards her and never will be,” BAC Talent’s Brandon Cohen told E!     Britney Spears’ Book Comes OutIn February 2022, Britney signed a reported $15 million deal with Simon & Schuster to write a memoir.And reader, she did. The Woman in Me came out Oct. 24, 2023 in all its bombshell-packed glory.Since finishing the manuscript, which concluded shy of her split from Sam, the star declared in an Instagram post a few days before the book’s release, “I have moved on and it’s a beautiful clean slate from here!!! Either way this is the last of it and s–t happens!!!”

    Jayden Federline Comes Home for Christmas With Mom Britney SpearsSix months after Kevin’s lawyer told Entertainment Tonight, “There has been some telephonic communication between Britney and her sons,” they gave her, gave her more. “Best Christmas of my life !!!” she wrote on Instagram of reuniting with youngest son Jayden in 2024. “I haven’t seen my boys in 2 years !!! Tears of joy and literally in shock everyday koo koo crazy so in love and blessed !!! I’m speechless thank you Jesus !!!” And she hit her fans with details one more time on New Year’s Eve, writing, “He came back and he feels older and smarter than me !!! He’s a man and I cry everyday of my life because of the miracle and genius he is !!! When he plays the whole earth shakes !!!”

    Britney Spears Marries HerselfProving her loneliness ain’t killing her no more, Britney revealed in an October 2024 Instagram post that she’d said yes—to herself. “The day I married myself,” she captioned the Oct. 20 video, set to Sting‘s “Fields of Gold.” While some might find the practice of sologamy “embarrassing or stupid,” she acknowledged, without sharing when the commitment ceremony took place, “but I think it’s the most brilliant thing I’ve ever done !!!”

    Britney Spears Jokes About Adopting a Baby GirlNope, Britney didn’t decided to expand her family, baby, one more time. Though the musician announced in a since-deleted July 2025 Instagram post that she’d adopted “a beautiful baby girl” named Lennon London Spears, the three winking emojis indicated she was simply joking around.

    Kevin Federline Tells All in His MemoirUnconcerned with becoming America’s most hated man, Britney’s former husband shared his side of their two-year union with his October 2025 memoir You Thought You Knew. In addition to detailing their toxic romance, her relationship with Justin Timberlake and Britney’s complicated relationship with their sons, the father of six also shared his concerns that his ex wasn’t exactly stronger than yesterday. “The truth is, this situation with Britney feels like it’s racing toward something irreversible,” he wrote. “It’s become impossible to pretend everything’s OK.” “From where I sit, the clock is ticking, and we’re getting close to the 11th hour,” Kevin continued. “Something bad is going to happen if things don’t change, and my biggest fear is that our sons will be left holding the pieces.”

    Britney Spears Lashes Out at Her Family AgainYears after reuniting with various members of her family—and mere months after her eldest son Sean spent the holidays with Aunt Jamie Lynn—Britney hit them with some accusations one more time.Noting that “as people, all we really want is to feel connected to each other and never feel alone,” the pop star wrote in a since-deleted Feb. 5, 2026, Instagram post, “I’m incredibly lucky to even be alive with how my family treated me once in my life and now I’m scared of them.” Leaning into her spiritual side, Britney added, “It’s weird how God works in mysterious ways. My friends, what do you think he is saying today ??? Because to be totally honest with you, no matter what he says, they will never take responsibility for what they did.”

    Britney Spears Sells Her Music CatalogTurns out someone very much wanted a piece of Britney. Legal docs obtained and published by TMZ in February 2026 showed that the Grammy winner signed away the ownership share of her catalog to music publisher Primary Wave in December.

    Britney Spears Is Arrested for Driving Under the InfluenceCiting law enforcement sources, TMZ reported that Britney was arrested on charges of driving under the influence in Los Angeles just after 9 p.m. on March 4. “This was an unfortunate incident that is completely inexcusable,” her rep said in a statement shared with E! News the following day. “Britney is going to take the right steps and comply with the law and hopefully this can be the first step in long overdue change that needs to occur in Britney’s life.” Among those in her corner were sons Sean and Jayden, her rep noting in the statement, that “her boys are going to be spending time with her.”

    Britney Spears Reunites With Kids Sean and Jayden Following Her ArrestAs promised, Britney’s boys did check in with her following her DUI arrest. Weeks later, the pop star provided a peek into their yacht outing with a March 29 Instagram video she captioned, “It’s all about that look.” In a subsequent clip, she wrote, “I better stay present whenever I can. I should disappear for how slow they went on that boat … I can still dream folks !!!”

    Britney Spears Enters a Treatment FacilityWeeks after Britney’s DUI arrest that saw her rep promising the singer’s “loved ones are going to come up with an overdue needed plan to set her up for success for wellbeing,” she seemed to take that first step. Britney’s rep confirmed to E! News April 12 that she had voluntarily checked herself into a treatment facility.
