Watch: Kellie Pickler Returns to ‘American Idol’ 3 Years After Husband Kyle Jacobs’ Death
An American Idol reunion? It’s a yes from Randy Jackson, dawg.
The OG judge made a rare TV appearance on May 4, returning to the music competition to mentor season 24 contestants Hannah Harper, Jordan McCullough, Keyla Richardson, Braden Rumfelt and Chris Tungseth as part of the episode’s “Class of 2006” theme.
“As a guy that was a judge on this program a long time ago,” Randy told Chris, “I always ask the question, ‘Are you in it to win?'”
And the Minnesota native was ready to learn from the music veteran. As Chris put it, “I grew up watching American Idol, so I’m a little starstruck. I love you.”
But Randy, 69, wasn’t the only familiar face who made an Idol comeback that night. His fellow judge Paula Abdul also returned, as well as former contestants Kellie Pickler, Elliott Yamin, Paris Bennett, Bucky Covington and season five winner Taylor Hicks.
“I’m just so happy to be at my old home,” Paula told current Idol hosts Luke Bryan, Lionel Richie and Carrie Underwood, who won season four in 2005, “and to see some of my children that are now grown and have kids, and meeting the new hopefuls.”
She added to the cast, “I hope all of you have the best time ever and leave your heart out there.”

Indeed, a lot has changed since Randy and Paula, 63, sat on the judges’ panel alongside Simon Cowell. In fact, Randy lost over 114 pounds as part of a lifestyle change.
“For a long time you see me on TV and people have noticed me in the past and I was struggling with my weight,” he told People in 2020, “then I finally got it off by using some pretty drastic measures.”
That includes undergoing gastric bypass surgery in 2003, enlisting help from fitness experts, overhauling his diet and working with mental health specialists.

“If I really feel like I need to have a piece of candy, I have a small piece so that in my mind, I’m not saying, ‘No, no, no,'” Randy shared. “The more you deny yourself, the more you’re going to go on a bender and have 18 candy bars without stopping at some point.”
“You have to change the way you think about food,” he added. “You have to almost have a complete divorce break up…and start back bit by bit and find out the things that work with your body.”
