Texas A&M opened the 2026 regular season in dominant fashion, at least in the second half, blowing out Missouri State 50-0 on Saturday night thanks to an elite defensive effort combined with 236 rushing yards and six touchdowns, while redshirt junior quarterback Marcel Reed was highly impressive, completing 21/30 for 233 yards and 2 touchdowns, and a 75.9 QBR.
Per Pro Football Focus, Reed led all Texas A&M players with an 80.6 offensive grade and 78.6 passing grade, which, compared to last year’s season opener, is a marginal improvement, especially based on PFF standards for quarterback grading. Looking poised in the pocket and delivering several NFL-level throws, Reed’s offseason focus on fixing his mechanical issues resulted in his best preseason, confirmed by coach Mike Elko last week.

Some of Reed’s best throws came behind the line of scrimmage and on 20-plus-yard deep throws, directing his receiver upfield on swing passes, while connecting with transfer wide receiver Isaiah Horton on multiple deep throws that showed off his improved accuracy and touch.
PFF released its Passing Pressure, Concept & Direction Report after Saturday’s win, providing more context regarding Reed’s success at every level of the field. According to the site, Reed was highly successful in play action, earning an elite 91.0 passing grade, while finishing 16/16 on behind-the-LOS and short throws and 4/7 on intermediate attempts.
When blitzed, Reed earned a solid 78.0 passing grade, making quick decisions to check down to the flat or use his legs to prevent a negative play. This version of Marcel Reed, combined with the offensive line continuing to improve, gives the Aggies a legitimate shot at returning to the CFP and competing in every SEC game at home or on the road.
