Watch: Suits Alum Neal McDonough Says Luke Perry Took Him in After Being Blackballed
Neal McDonough found a friend in Luke Perry during the darkest of times.
The Desperate Housewives alum shared how the late Beverly Hills, 90210 star had his back when he “lost everything” to a drinking problem, which McDonough said stemmed from being blacklisted by Hollywood as a “religious nut bag” for refusing to kiss a costar onscreen.
“Luke saw me one night at a premiere and he saw I was a mess,” McDonough recalled in a Fox News interview published May 26. “He’s like, ‘What’s going on with you? I hear things aren’t going so great.'”
And when McDonough poured his soul to Perry, he said the Riverdale actor—who died in 2019 at age 52—replied, “‘Why don’t you stay at my house? I don’t live in there anymore. It’s right by your house in Hancock Park. Stay there for as long as you want.'”
In fact, the 60-year-old said Perry handed the keys to him right then and there.
“I was like, ‘You mean it?’ McDonough recounted. “And he was like, ‘Yeah, here’s the keys.'”

The heartwarming gesture greatly moved McDonough, who was drinking heavily at the time to cope with his lack of job offers. As he put it, “‘What time is the bar open?’ That was generally my thought process back then.”
“I still didn’t think I was worth anything because I failed my family,” continued McDonough, who shares five kids with his wife Ruvé Robertson. “And that crucifixion caused me so much inner pain because I made it all about me. How could I let the team down?”

But thanks to his family and friends, McDonough was able to quit drinking. He went on to star in a variety of works, including Justified, Suits, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Arrow, Legends of Tomorrow and Tulsa King.
McDonough has also found greater appreciation for his wife, who he said he loves “so much” that he refuses to kiss another woman onscreen.
“It’s just a cold, hard fact that God gave me an amazing, incredible, most amazing woman that I’ve ever met,” he said. “She’s my good luck charm, and she got through me hell.”

Ellen and her wife Portia de Rossi have since moved to the Cotswolds, deciding to stay put in November 2024 after Donald Trump‘s reelection, the talk show host told to Richard Bacon in a July 2025 conversation at the Everyman theater in Cheltenham.”It’s absolutely beautiful,” she gushed about the English countryside, per the BBC. “We’re just not used to seeing this kind of beauty. The villages and the towns and the architecture—everything you see is charming and it’s just a simpler way of life.”It’s clean,” Ellen continued. “Everything here is just better—the way animals are treated, people are polite. I just love it here. We moved here in November, which was not the ideal time, but I saw snow for the first time in my life. We love it here. Portia flew her horses here, and I have chickens, and we had sheep for about two weeks.”
