Watch: Mighty Ducks’ Shaun Weiss Details 7-Year Sobriety Journey After Addiction Battle, Homelessness
Shaun Weiss had more than one slip on the ice before he got to where he is today.
The Mighty Ducks star recently shared insight into his latest sobriety milestone, detailing the difficult journey it took to get there.
“I’ve been clean for seven years,” Weiss told E! News in an exclusive interview. “I lived in sober living for three years. I did inpatient treatment for a whole year.”
And now that he’s skating down a steadier path, the former child star is taking what he’s learned and paying it forward, working to launch charities in Los Angeles and Atlanta that give those experiencing addiction and homelessness an opportunity to get clean in a safe, healthy environment.
“I’ve seen literally hundreds of young addicts come and go,” he explained. I’ve seen what works. I’ve seen what doesn’t work. The only way that I was really able to get clean was that I had access to really high-end level treatment.”
So, being able to help others struggling is what fulfills him. As he put it, “I’m really excited about that and that’s where I find my purpose.”
Meanwhile, with so many years of sobriety behind him, Weiss can see what personal problems led to his struggles with addiction.
“I know in my personal case, I was just never really a happy guy,” he recalled. “I was always reaching for things on the outside to fill me up. It wasn’t until really I found yoga and started doing some yogic practices and learned to be self-contained—just be more being more in control of my own happiness.”
When it came to his struggles with depression, the Pee-Wee’s Playhouse alum acknowledged, “That’s the fundamental jump off point of the problems that lead to drugs.”
The 48-year-old also considered that his role as a child actor didn’t help keep him out of trouble.

“The lines get crossed and it can get to a level where it’s unmanageable,” he shared. “It was really hard for my parents to discipline me when I was making the car payments.”
But while Weiss—who recently dived back into acting by starring as Freddy in Deformelody: An American Nightmare last year—has been dealt his fair share of struggles, he wouldn’t turn in any of his cards.
“I don’t have any regrets,” he said. “I’ve had sort of a life that’s been tumultuous at times, but I’m really happy with the guy I am today, and I don’t think I’d be that guy if I hadn’t suffered through all those experiences.”
If the Heavyweights actor could share one thing with his younger self, though? He posited, “I’d probably just say, ‘Hang in there. Everything will be alright.’”
