Tragedy marks the third drowning in B.C. in the past week

A man drowned in Abbotsford’s Albert Dyck Park on Saturday afternoon.

Abbotsford Police Department spokesperson Sgt. Paul Walker said emergency services were called to the park near the airport at around 4:45 p.m. on Aug. 22 after receiving reports that a person was submerged in the water.

The park is mostly made up of a small, man-made lake that has a swimming area at one end and an area for water-skiing at the other.

“When first responders arrived, bystanders had already pulled the (33-year-old) man from the water and begun performing CPR,” Sgt. Walker said.

“Despite the efforts of emergency personnel, the man was pronounced dead at the scene. Police have determined the drowning was a tragic accident.”

This was the third drowning in B.C. in the past week.

On Aug. 20, a man drowned in Cultus Lake and on Aug. 17 a man drowned in Goldstream Park on Vancouver Island.

So far this year at least 43 people have drowned in B.C., around 50 per cent higher than the same time last year.
