An evacuation alert has been issued for 30 Lions Bay properties due to a nearby out-of-control wildfire.

The Village of Lions Bay issued the alert Sunday evening at 9 p.m. as the Lone Tree Creek Wildfire continues to grow.

A total of 30 homes, including all properties on Oceanview Road with house numbers of 245 and up and all properties on Kelvin Grove Road with house numbers of 155 and up, have been told to prepare their things and be ready to leave at a moment’s notice should the alert be upgraded to an order.

“This evacuation alert is to prepare you in the event that there is a need to evacuate your premises or property should an evacuation order be reissued,” the alert notice read.

“Residents will be given as much advance notice as possible before evacuation is ordered; however, you may receive limited notice due to changing conditions.”

The Lone Tree Creek wildfire is listed as being out of control, burning 100 square metres in size as of Monday morning with smoke visible from the Sea to Sky Highway. It was discovered on Sunday and is suspected to have been sparked by lightning during the weekend’s stunning thunderstorm over Metro Vancouver.

More than 7,000 lightning strikes were recorded across the province, with a number of fires sparked in the southern part of B.C.

“Fortunately, many of the areas affected by lightning also received good precipitation, helping to decrease fire behaviour and the likelihood of new starts,” read an update issued Sunday by the B.C. Wildfire Service.

As of Aug. 23, there were 184 active wildfires across the province, 60 of which were sparked in the last 24 hours of the BCWS update.
