$58.6 billion
That’s Nike’s market capitalization as of late August. As impressive as the number might appear at first glance, it represents a 78% drop over the last five years—from a 2021 high of $276.7 billion. The market cap has fallen 40% this year alone. The company’s flagging share price means it is being removed this month from the S&P 100, an index of the largest publicly traded companies in the U.S.
Analysts tell Front Office Sports that dropping from the S&P 100 to the S&P 500 is more “embarrassing” than significant. But it reflects how far the sportswear company must go to turn things around. CEO Elliott Hill, who took the helm two years ago, is trying to rebuild frayed relationships with Nike’s retail partners and has shifted strategy in China.

“Bone deep down to the marrow stupid.”
—U.S. Senator John Kennedy of Louisiana on Wednesday, referring to the SEC’s threat to expel LSU from the conference after it tried to roster two NFL players—Dae’Quan Wright and Zxavian Harris—who had signed NFL preseason contracts. The conference has scheduled a meeting Thursday with school presidents and chancellors to vote on LSU’s future. It’s also filed an amended complaint as part of a lawsuit to establish its right to expel LSU—though a Wednesday hearing in that case was postponed.
It’s unlikely that the SEC will expel LSU, given that head coach Lane Kiffin ultimately decided not to roster the former pros, leaving Wright and Harris in limbo. But Kennedy, who taught law at LSU for 14 years, still issued his own warning: “They’re not going to throw LSU out of the SEC. Let me tell you something, I and a lot of other people in the United States Congress will be on them like a hobo on a ham sandwich. LSU hasn’t done anything wrong.”
