La Liga icon slams Real Madrid superstar’s contract renewal: ‘Should have left for free’

One of the biggest talking points surrounding Real Madrid since the summer has been Vinicius Jr.’s contract renewal.

During the transfer window, it was unclear whether the Brazilian would put pen to paper on a new contract.

After he was linked with a move to Arsenal, Real Madrid compromised and renegotiated the terms to sign Vinicius to a long-term deal.

However, his poor form since the start of the season, coupled with Yan Diomande’s emergence, has now raised questions about whether Real Madrid should have offered him a renewal at all.

During an appearance on COPE, former Real Madrid goalkeeper Santiago Canizares was scathing in his criticism of Vinicius.

He argued that Real Madrid made a mistake by extending his contract.

“I think renewing Vinicius was a mistake because the player had already completely paid for himself,” Canizares declared (h/t Defensa Central).

Canizares also questioned Arsenal’s interest and suggested that not every big club would want Vinicius.

“He’s a very difficult character, and not every club wants him. Big clubs also care about their image,” he argued.

Canizares did not stop there, claiming that Vinicius compares unfavourably with Diomande in terms of temperament and appeal.

He also criticised Jose Mourinho for repeatedly playing the Brazilian despite his lack of contribution to the team.

“Renewing him was a mistake, but playing him is doubly a mistake,” Canizares insisted.

“He contributed, won two Champions Leagues, but that’s over now. At the moment, he contributes nothing in terms of image, the group or football.”

It has not helped Vinicius’ cause one bit that Real Madrid’s resurgence has coincided with his suspension.

During this period, Jose Mourinho has found much better balance with Yan Diomande on the left, Arda Guler on the right and Bernardo Silva in midfield.

However, the reactions to his time at Madrid have been too hasty. Supporters should not forget his contribution to the club’s last two European triumphs.

The Brazilian is under contract at Real Madrid until 2032, and everyone knows how good he can be when fit and in form.

At the moment, Vinicius is going through a difficult time in the Spanish capital, but the best thing about time is that things change.

Madrid fans will hope that the Brazilian is back to his best after his suspension, and it remains to be seen how he fares against AEK Athens tomorrow.
