Watch: Kurt Russell Explains Reason He & Goldie Hawn Moved Away From Hollywood to Colorado
Kurt Russell didn’t escape from Los Angeles.
The Once Upon A Time in Hollywood star shared the reason why he and Goldie Hawn—his partner of 42 years—decided to relocate from California to Colorado in 1986 was because it was better for their blended family “on a day-to-day basis.”
“What I want to look at, what I want to be a part of [are] all the things that Colorado has to offer,” Kurt told People in an interview published May 31, adding, “I wanted to eventually get into the ranching life.”
“When Goldie and I got together,” Kurt explained of the beginning of his relationship with the Death Becomes Her actress in 1983, “a couple of years later, we both built a ranch there together, where our family has grown up.”
That family includes their son Wyatt Russell, 39, as well as Oliver Hudson, 49, and Kate Hudson, 46, from Goldie’s previous marriage to Bill Hudson, in addition to Boston Russell, 46, whom Kurt shares with ex-wife Season Hubley.
“It’s very different from living in a city. They grew up with a good dose of what nature can offer,” Kurt, who himself grew up in Maine, noted of his kids’ upbringing. “There are difficulties to it, but there are also great rewards to it. I’m just more comfortable there.”
But the 75-year-old—who received a star on the Walk of Fame in 2017—clarified he wasn’t trying to run away from Hollywood.
“I don’t dislike L.A.,” Kurt said. “I wasn’t escaping. I was just living where I live. I was fortunate that it really didn’t make any difference.”
Yet, he acknowledged it was an unusual choice at the time, adding, “When I did it, nobody else was doing that. I had many people tell me, ‘Well, that’s goodbye. That’s it.’ I said, ‘Well, we’ll see.'”

Kurt’s career, of course, would only continue to blossom over the decades. The actor went on to star in dozens of beloved films, several of which also featured Goldie, like Overboard and The Christmas Chronicles.
As such, Kurt has offered simple advice for successfully working with a romantic partner. He quipped to The Daily Pop in 2020, “Do it every 33 years, first of all.”

Ellen and her wife Portia de Rossi have since moved to the Cotswolds, deciding to stay put in November 2024 after Donald Trump‘s reelection, the talk show host told to Richard Bacon in a July 2025 conversation at the Everyman theater in Cheltenham.”It’s absolutely beautiful,” she gushed about the English countryside, per the BBC. “We’re just not used to seeing this kind of beauty. The villages and the towns and the architecture—everything you see is charming and it’s just a simpler way of life.”It’s clean,” Ellen continued. “Everything here is just better—the way animals are treated, people are polite. I just love it here. We moved here in November, which was not the ideal time, but I saw snow for the first time in my life. We love it here. Portia flew her horses here, and I have chickens, and we had sheep for about two weeks.”
