Watch: John Goodman Says His Body Is “Messed Up” After 200-Lb. Weight Loss Transformation
John Goodman doesn’t feel quite rock solid about his appearance just yet.
In fact, the Righteous Gemstones alum turned down a nude scene on the HBO comedy—which ran for four seasons from 2019 to 2025—because he wasn’t sure how his body would look on camera after his 200-pound weight loss.
“I thought I was going to have to be naked in it and I said, ‘I don’t know. My body’s too messed up losing all this weight,'” Goodman shared on the Nov. 2 episode of the Happy Sad Confused podcast, explaining that he and the crew eventually found a way to make it work and “got it done.”
And the 74-year-old is still adjusting to his new normal.
“I’m still trying to get used to my face,” he continued. “It’s weird. I think of myself as one way and then I look at myself, ‘Oh, wow!'”
He added, “It’s strange. It’s fun to get used to. There’s a lot of stuff I’m getting used to.”
Looking back at his lifestyle pre-transformation, Goodman believes it may have impacted his career as a form of “self-sabotage.”
“I was working enough as I was,” he said. “I wasn’t crazy about it, but I wonder if I probably sabotaged myself.”
The Digger star has been candid about his yearslong struggles with his weight. As he recently shared, he was “eating alcoholically” after going sober in 2007, leading him to weigh “almost 400 pounds” at his heaviest.
“I’d lose 60 pounds in a summer, gain it all back. 70 pounds, 80 pounds,” Goodman recalled in an interview with The New Yorker published Oct. 18. “And that got tiring.”

Though he eventually lost half his body weight after undergoing stomach surgery, the Roseanne actor—married to Anna Beth Goodman—is now dealing with some lasting side effects. As he put it, “I also turned anemic and lost a layer of fat under my skin, and I’m cold all the time.”
That’s why Goodman’s current goal is to build up strength and take care of his body.
“Basically, building up the core, balance, strength training, stuff like that, so I don’t fall down—which I did as soon as I got back to London from Christmas break,” Goodman shared. “I came down parallel to the ground, on my hip, and fractured it.”
