Watch: Joanna Gaines Shares Rare Glimpse of Her, Chip Gaines’ 5 Kids During Family Trip to Colorado
If your relationship is in need of a fixer upper, Joanna Gaines has the blueprint for you.
The HGTV star shared insight into her long-lasting marriage with Chip Gaines, revealing what she believes is the secret to their strong bond after over 25 years together.
“I love just how opposite we are,” Joanna shared on the Nov. 4 episode of the Not Gonna Lie podcast. “I do feel like once you understand that Chip’s strengths and my strengths are very different, but together, it really does create magic. There’s a tension there, but then there’s power there that really happens when you embrace it.”
“For both of us, we’re OK evolving,” she continued to host Kylie Kelce. “It’s not like, ‘This is who I am, and that’s who you are.’”
The Fixer Upper star—who shares kids Drake, 21, Ella, 19, Duke, 18, Emmie, 16, and Crew, 8, with Chip—emphasized that her husband of 23 years is “challenging me every day.”
As Joanna put it, the couple holds “each other’s differences with this respect and almost this awe.”
And the pair—who tied the knot in May 2003—lean into the less comfortable moments, even if they aren’t easy.
“Even though I call it chaos,” Joanna explained, “but finding that discomfort in every season and working through that together really does make you stronger.”
“There’s always a challenge so that we’re never just comfortable with each other,” she added. “And we’re always learning something new together.”
As for what following this mindset can look like? The Magnolia founder shared that she’s seen a “shift happening,” in which she’s becoming “more extroverted” like her husband and vice versa.

“It’s like dating all over again,” she noted, “getting to know each other.”
Ultimately, Joanna and Chip are always encouraging each other to be their best selves.
“So enjoying the unfolding, enjoying the evolution,” she shared, “but also always pushing each other to a way that’s good.”
“He really is my best friend,” the 48-year-old added. “I love it.”
