The Jigawa State House of Assembly has approved the proposed constitutional amendment seeking the establishment of state police in Nigeria.
The Speaker of the House, Haruna Aliyu Dangyatin, announced the approval during plenary on Tuesday.
He said the approval is aimed at strengthening community policing and improving security at the state and local government levels.
He explained that the proposed amendment was transmitted to the Jigawa State House of Assembly for consideration following its passage by the Senate and the House of Representatives.
The development forms part of ongoing efforts to decentralise policing in Nigeria and give state governments greater responsibility for addressing security challenges within their jurisdictions.
Recall that the National Assembly has given a 30-day deadline for the state legislatures to communicate their positions, on either supporting or opposing the bill.
