Watch: Jeopardy! Contestant Hilariously Predicts Downfall of Other Competitors
Jamie Ding will take “How to Win” for $1,000.
After winning 31 consecutive Jeopardy! games—and picking up almost $900,000—the TV champ has found the secret to buzzing in at the right time, allowing him to ring in before his fellow contestants.
“They tell you to watch for the lights next to the board and then buzz in,” Ding explained on Good Morning AmericaApril 24. “But I do buzz in based on the sound of [host Ken Jenning’s] voice—try to time it that way.”
And he isn’t precious about his technique, admitting that he’s even shared his secret with other contestants. After one of them asked him if he goes with the lights or the sound, Ding noted, “I felt, ‘Well, it would probably be fair to tell everyone that rather than just one.’”
However, Ding—a bureaucrat and law student—confessed his trick isn’t always foolproof and has likely even locked him out of answering questions if he buzzes in slightly too early.
“I don’t always get it perfect,” he explained. “But overall, probably pretty good. I’ve got musical training, so good timing there. And wonderful comedic timing.”
Since making his first appearance on the March 13 episode of Jeopardy!, Ding’s wins have placed him fifth in the all-time ranking of consecutive game wins, behind Jennings who won 74, AmySchneider with 40, MattAmodio with 38 and JamesHolzhauer who won 32.

Ding is also fifth in terms of highest winnings during the show’s regular season, having picked up $882,605. He trails Jennings, who is once again in first place with $2,520,700, followed by Holzhauer, who won $2,462,216, Amodio with $1,518,601 and Schneider with $1,382,800.
Ding certainly never expected to make it this far in the game—let alone make Jeopardy! history.
“Nobody goes in planning to win 30 games,” he told GMA. “Only a complete egomaniac would do that.”
“I mean, I thought—I entertained the possibility,” he added. “It’s nice to dream big but that it’s actually happened is—it’s amazing. It’s wonderful.”
