Watch: Kevin McKidd’s Next TV Role Revealed After ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Exit
For several seasons now, it’s seemed that Grey’s Anatomy‘s Owen Hunt and Teddy Altman don’t quite know how to say how they feel.
But after wasting plenty of time chasin’ cars around their heads, there’s reason to hope the on-and-off pair will ride off into their post-Grey’s future together.
Announcing that Kevin McKidd and Kim Raver will be hanging up their scrub caps after a respective 18 and 12 seasons on the long-running medical series, show creator Shonda Rhimes teased that their final episode May 7 won’t end with an out-of-nowhere semi-truck collision, a tragic plane crash, an electrocution in a flooded basement or any other wild turn of events necessitating a time of death call.
“Over the years, we have had the privilege of watching Owen and Teddy’s love story evolve and deepen—two characters who always seem to find their way back to each other,” Rimes explained in a statement. “It is both bittersweet and joyful to give this couple the happy ending their story deserves.”
And while McKidd already has plans to scrub into a new show—the Scottish actor landed the lead role in ITV’s upcoming British drama series The Only Suspect, E! News recently confirmed—their departure is still like defibrillator to the heart for the rest of the cast.
“It’s really tough,” Camilla Luddington recently admitted to E! News, teasing the show’s “huge” season 22 finale. “We’ve all become family. We’re shooting for—it’s an 18 episode show right now and I’ve shot with Kevin when it’s been 25 episodes—so you grow so close.”
She’s hopeful though, that this is more of a see you later than a firm goodbye.
Noting that it will feel “very strange” on set without them, the veteran cast member (her 14 seasons are only trumped by OG stars James Pickens Jr. and Chandra Wilson, as well as now part-timer Ellen Pompeo) told E!, “Hopefully we’ll see them next season.”
Because, of course, they wouldn’t be the first departed doctors to pay the show an office visit. As the drama wraps its 22nd season, it’s a beautiful day to check in with its many former stars.
