Watch: LeBron James Reveals New Career Venture After Leaving LA Lakers in NBA Switch-Up
Ernie Johnson is throwing fans for a hoop.
The legendary TV host decided this season of Inside the NBA would be his last after hosting the analyst sportscast for 37 years, emphasizing the transition was “totally my decision.”
“As the years have gone by, and I turned 70 this past summer, folks have asked me, ‘So, how long are you going to keep doing Inside?'” Johnson announced in a video on X. “Well, I want to take a couple of minutes of your time to answer that. This will be my last season.”
And though the anchor reiterated, “it’s just time,” that doesn’t mean he won’t miss his TV family, including co-hosts Shaquille O’Neal, Kenny Smith and Charles Barkley as they keep hosting the series.
“It’s been an honor to share so many nights, decades actually, at the desk with my brothers Kenny, Charles and Shaq,” Johnson continued, “and with our production crews who are so talented and devoted. I so appreciate the leadership at TNT and ESPN for allowing the show to continue.”
The analyst explained he knew he was ready to move on from his dream job after the meticulous preparation he loved putting into each episode started to feel like “more of a challenge than it is a joy.” But he also shared that another “contributing factor” was putting his heart health first.
“For nearly two years now, I’ve dealt with heart issues,” Johnson revealed. “I had bypass surgery 14 months ago. Still trying to get this thing to beat exactly the way it should, and we’re getting there.”
However, the 70-year-old noted his doctor did not instruct him to step away and that he would not be retiring from commentating altogether. Still, he’s excited for how this new chapter will provide him with more family time in Georgia, where he lives with wife Cheryl Ann Johnson.

“Going through that,” Johnson said, referring to his ongoing heart issues, “has made me treasure even more every second with my amazing wife of 44 years, Cheryl Ann, and being Poppy to our five grandchildren.”
As such, Johnson plans to “slow down a bit” in addition to coming off the sidelines to cover major tournaments.
Johnson signed off by thanking his fans for sticking with him in the paint all of these years. As he put it, “I just want to say thanks to you, thanks for your loyalty, for your love, for your support, and on this day, for your understanding.”
