Watch: Paul Bettany Shares Rare Glimpse Into Life With Wife Jennifer Connelly
Paul Bettanyhas, quite literally, seen better days on Marvel sets.
Nearly two decades after joining the superhero franchise, the actor admitted filming his new TV series VisionQuest led to a pretty jarring injury—one that required no high-flying stunts. As he revealed, he accidentally popped 10 blood vessels in his eye while shooting a particularly harrowing scene for the new Marvel series.
“I was pretending to have a device on my head that is doing something to my brain,” Bettany recalled on the Oct. 29 episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live!, “and I was just wildly overacting.”
But because the 55-year-old was so dilated in, he ended up blowing out the vessels in his eye, quipping, “I mean, it was a lesson in less is more.”
Host Jimmy Kimmel pulled out a photo of Bettany from the set, showing just how bloody his left eye looked, adding, “I’m impressed when actors can cry on command, you’re actually able to pop your eye on command.”
But it was less than a perfect vision for the production team. The injury took about two weeks to fully heal, at which point they’d still had to continue on with filming VisionQuest, in which Bettany—who shares kids Stellan, 23, and Agnes, 15, as well as stepson Kai, 29,with wife JenniferConnelly—reprises his role as Vision.
“I think it must have cost production so much to take it out,” Bettany considered, with Kimmel noting that they “had to do their magic and fix it.”

“I mean, the irony is the actor playing Vision is kind of myopic,” Bettany continued of his own nearsightedness. “I can’t see a thing when I take my glasses off.”
He added with a laugh, “Which is great depending on the actor.”
Luckily, VisionQuest kept him booked and busy in England, working alongside costars JamesSpader, RuaridhMollica, EmilyHampshire and more. Although, he was perhaps too busy, even for Vision’s epic Mindspace.

“I’m not complaining about the amount of work,” Bettany shared with E! News in October, “but there are so many pages to get through in a day that you find yourself spending a lot of time working on scenes at night, and I found it really difficult to wind down at the end of the day.”
Of course, he was truly bewitched by the opportunity to bring a new version of Vision to life almost 20 years after he joined the Marvel Universe as J.A.R.V.I.S. in 2008’s Iron Man.
“It was an amazing experience,” he beamed, also teasing, “You’re getting really well paid for it, and that’s great.”
