Watch: Hayden Panettiere Details Bleeding Out, Almost Dying During Childbirth
Hayden Panettiere didn’t want to undermine Connie Britton IRL.
While her Nashville character Juliette Barnes’ rising country music career threatened that of Connie’s Rayna Jaymes, Hayden was admittedly concerned life would imitate art after her own billing on the series had “gone way up” following the pilot’s success.
“My character wasn’t intended to be the show’s star—not even close,” Hayden wrote in her memoir This Is Me: A Reckoning, out now. “That honor went to Connie, whose Rayna Jaymes was in the twilight of her career, facing a dramatic turning point thanks to yours truly. Juliette wasn’t necessarily Rayna’s enemy, but she was the antagonist.”
However, Hayden noted how she soon “went from maybe number five in terms of importance to nipping at Connie’s heels” on set, leaving her “deeply uncomfortable with this development.”
“I was 23 years old, and Connie was in her 40s with three Emmy nominations under her belt,” the Heroes alum continued. “This should have been her time to shine, and while it was in many respects, I was terrified of making Connie worry that I—not my character—was trying to compete with her.”
That’s why Hayden, now 36, said she always “made sure to grab the mic under Connie’s hand, showing her I came in peace and with respect” when they filmed a scene where both their characters reached for a microphone at the same time.
“I don’t know if she noticed, but I did,” Hayden added. “I was not going to step on the toes of Rayna James or Connie Britton.”

Though she was determined to show deference to the Friday Night Lights star, some of Hayden’s personal life did end up making its way into the show, which spanned eight seasons between 2012 and 2018. Take her pregnancy with daughter Kaya, who Hayden welcomed with then-fiancé Wladimir Klitschko in 2014, for example.
“There was no way the writers on Nashville could work around my pregnancy, so they made it part of the plot,” she explained in her book. “Fans and critics loved Juliette’s pregnancy, figuring it was one more twist in a twisty plot that kept twisting.”
“I hated it, though,” Hayden continued. “Juliette’s difficult, unexpected pregnancy was clearly the product of Nashville‘s writers rejiggering my personal life and making it a plot device.”

And now with Kaya expressing her interest in becoming an actress, Hayden is extra cautious of defining boundaries between real-life and TV. In fact, she recently admitted that the prospect of her 11-year-old entering show business has become a “nail-biter.”
“I always want to support whatever she wants to do, but I am trying to guide her towards, ‘Let’s not rush into anything. Why don’t you try a few things out and have a college experience?'” Hayden told E! News. “She still has the ability to fly under the radar, and once you give that up, you don’t get that back. Once you’re out there, and you’re famous and known, there’s no getting your privacy back.”
