Watch: Gypsy Rose Blanchard Shares Chilling Words Said Before Mom’s Murder
Gypsy Rose Blanchard is looking back at a terrifying night.
Nearly three years after her release from prison, the Life After Lock Up star reflected on the fateful night in 2015 when her then-boyfriend Nicholas Godejohn fatally stabbed her mother Claudine “Dee Dee” Blanchard.
“I heard screaming,” Blanchard recalled on the June 9 episode of Paul C. Brunson’s We Need to Talk podcast. “It was a horrible sound. It was screaming. It was shock.”
The 34-year-old—who served eight years for her assistance in the murder of her mother—also remembered hearing her mom ask Godejohn who he was, noting her mom’s words were confirmed by Godejohn’s testimony as well as conversations he had with his fellow inmates.
“She had asked, ‘Who are you,’” Blanchard said, “and he responded, ‘I am death.’”
“I remember her calling out for my name,” she added. “I felt like I wanted to go and help her, but I was terrified at the same time. Like my body was paralyzed. I couldn’t move.”
Blanchard also shared other details about thatnight, saying that she and her mother had decided earlier in the evening that it would be nice to paint their nails and watch a movie.
“I wanted to make it a good night. I wanted to make it a night that I felt like I would remember her for the good,” Blanchard shared. “She cooked dinner, she ate her dinner. I painted her nails, she painted my nails. [We] picked out a movie and laid down. She took a little longer to fall asleep and then I fell asleep.”

After she woke up, she texted Godejohn—whom she’d known for three years at the time—that her mother had fallen asleep. And once he arrived at their home, she recalled, “First thing he said when he comes to the door is, ‘This b—h is dead.’”
He then ordered Blanchard to go into the bathroom.
“I lock the door behind me,” she said, “and I just kind of get into the fetal position and I cover my ears.”
As for the murder, Blanchard was in shock that it happened, telling Brunson, “I honestly didn’t think that he was going to go through with it until it actually happened.”
Following her mother’s death, Blanchard pleaded guilty to second degree murder and was sentenced to 10 years in prison. Godejohn was convicted of first degree murder and is serving a life sentence without parole.
Since her 2023 release, Blanchard has been focusing on taking care of herself as well as her and fiancé Ken Urker’s 18 month old daughter Aurora. She’s also acknowledged that one day she will likely have to explain her conviction to her baby girl.
“I have been hit with the question, ‘How are you going to tell your daughter about what you did?’” she shared on an episode of Gypsy Rose: Life After Lockup in 2025. “I just want to know that she’s going to love me and forgive me for what I did in my past.”
Blanchard noted that she’s “not a monster,” adding of Aurora, “I don’t want her to grow up thinking that I’m one.”
