As questions continue to swirl around the collapse and subsequent hospitalization of Matthew Mayich, Arizona State is parting ways with Greg Powers.
The hockey coach had been placed on administrative leave by the university after questions about the workout that led to Mayich’s hospitalization were unanswered by an internal investigation and seemingly violated numerous policies. According to The Arizona Republic, part of the USA TODAY Network, non-staff workout instructor Tim Ziesel was not vetted properly before running the military-style workout.

Taking Powers’ place will be coaching veteran Dave Hakstol, who will come off the bench of the Colorado Avalanche. Haskstol, who coached North Dakota for 11 years and made the national title game in his first season with the Fighting Hawks, most recently served as the Seattle Kraken‘s inaugural head coach from 2021-24.
In an email to The Republic, Arizona State wrote it had “reached a mutual agreement to part ways with hockey coach Greg Powers. The university and Sun Devil Athletics are grateful for Coach Powers’ work to establish ASU as a Division I hockey program and for his service over the past nearly two decades.”
ASU athletic director Graham Rossini wrote in a statement on Hakstol: “We welcome Dave Hakstol and his family to Arizona State University. His success building championship-caliber programs, developing players for the highest level of the sport and leading organizations in the NHL speaks to his knowledge of the game and his ability to develop talent.”

Hakstol was responsible for the Avalanche’s power play as an assistant for Colorado. The Avalanche hired Brett McLean to replace him.
