Watch: Don’t Break These Met Gala Rules—Or You Won’t Be Invited Back
With great star power comes great responsibility.
And so those hoping to snag an invite to the annual Met Gala must adhere to Anna Wintour‘s wide web of regulations.
As the iconic charity event’s lead chairwoman since 1995, Vogue‘s global editorial director has set a high standard for the event to maintain its prestige. In fact, Wintour is known to have rules and guidelines for both staffers and guests of the exclusive party, which falls on the first Monday of May every year.
“Anna is meticulously vetting every single thing, from the napkins to the forks to the lighting,” late Vogue contributing editor Andre Leon Talley said in The First Monday in May, the 2016 documentary about the Met Gala. “The detail of the flowers, the detail of the ushers, how they’re dressed, everything has been vetted for months and weeks and months and weeks.”
And seeing how it’s a fashion fundraiser, there’s naturally a dress code for attendees. Traditionally, party-goers are asked to dress in theme to the title exhibition of Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute, with this year’s “Costume Art” display dictating the “Fashion is Art” guidance.
However, in recent times, Wintour has relaxed the reins a bit.
“This exhibition broke my cardinal rule,” she admitted to Today in 2024, when the showcase was titled “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion” but a “Garden of Time” dress code was assigned. “Which is when we came up with the title ‘Sleeping Beauties,’ it’s wonderful and poetic and romantic but it actually—it could be many, many things.”
Wintour continued with a laugh, “I fear that we’ve unleashed a lot of confusion out there.”

The same can be said about the Met Gala’s infamous “No Phone Cameras” rule, which appears to have become more of a suggestion.
After all, Kylie Jenner famously defied the policy in 2017—when she took a bathroom selfie with Kendall Jenner, Kim Kardashian, Brie Larson, Paris Jackson, Frank Ocean, Lily Aldridge, A$AP Rocky and more stars—but was still invited back to the event the following year.
“She likes a dinner party where people are actually speaking to each other,” former Met Gala staffer Sylvana Ward Durrett told the New York Post of Wintour in 2016. “We aren’t sitting over people’s shoulders, but if it’s an obvious thing we might gently remind them.”
But Wintour will still adhere to some strict traditions, such as a seating chart and age limit. For everything to know about what really takes to get invited to the Met Gala, keep reading…
