In the very first game of the 2026 college football season, the Clemson Tigers lost to the LSU Tigers by a huge margin of 51-10. After this embarrassing loss last Saturday, when Clemson’s head coach Dabo Swinney came to the press conference, a reporter, Chapel Fowler, asked him if he regretted not selecting new players for the team before the season started, which low-key made the coach frustrated.

Clemson football Coach Dabo Swinney talks about Early National Letter of Intent Signing Day in the Smart Family Media Center December 20, 2023.Instead of answering the question, he accused the reporter of trying to create controversy and asked, “Did you play football?” The argument between the coach and the reporter went viral online. Fans felt that after such a huge and historic loss, the reporter’s question was completely valid, and the coach shouldn’t have shown such irritation.

Clemson’s performance was really bad: a 41-point gap, the biggest loss in Swinney’s 18-year tenure. Before this, the 2025 season was also bad for Swinney (7 wins, 6 losses). Their worst record since 2010. The reporter asked straight up if there was any mistake in picking the team. Coach Swinney replied:
“Chapel, you come with all these questions. I’ll tell you, you’re the gotcha guy. No, I don’t, I don’t, man. I regret being 0-1-1 right now. I regret that.
“I know that’s your role and that’s in this environment, you know, to be the guy that wants to create all the controversy and ask the controversial questions.”
“Did you play football? No. Okay, well, they give you 12 games, and at the end of the year you count them up. All right? And, you know, that’s when those type of questions are fair to me. Not after one game to maybe the best team in the country.”
But after seeing such a bad loss on TV across the country, all Clemson fans wanted the answer. Fans said the arrogance will be the very reason for Clemson’s downfall.
“That smug arrogance is gonna be his downfall,” a user wrote.
“Forget firing, this man should be sacrificed,” another user reacted.
“You may not have 11 more games bud,” another user wrote.
“Dabo owes @chapelfowler an apology. There has been no more staunch of a supporter than me until now, but he has not only lost the plot, he has lost control,” one wrote.
“I think its time for bubba to call it quits and turn to a career in politics,” one fan wrote.
Media experts Dan Wolken and Paul Finebaum said that Swinney is failing to understand that modern football has changed. He needed to be more patient, and now “it’s over for Dabo Swinney,”Finebaum said.

LSU took 48 experienced players from other teams via the transfer portal, while Clemson brought in 19 new players and relied on their old players in key positions (quarterback and offensive line), who completely flopped in the game.
