An Alberta man has been arrested after a high speed car chase by Vancouver police on Monday.

Officers on patrol near East Hastings Street and Dunlevy Avenue at 2:40 p.m. on Monday saw a woman in the passenger seat of a parked BMW who appeared to be distraught. The officers turned on their emergency lights to conduct a welfare check, said VPD in a statement.

The car, with Alberta plates, immediately sped away.

A vehicle pursuit — with emergency lights and sirens active — was authorized. The BWM fled into the downtown core driving at high speeds, weaving into oncoming traffic, as several police vehicles joined the pursuit, said police.

The chase ended near Waterfront Station after police blocked the fleeing car and arrested the driver. No one was injured.

The driver, a 44-year-old Alberta man, was arrested and is facing charges of forcible confinement, drug possession, and dangerous driving. The female passenger was co-operating with police as the investigation continues.

Charge laid after senior with walker pushed to ground

An assault charge has been laid after Vancouver police officers on patrol in the Downtown Eastside witnessed a man push an 86-year-old woman to the ground.

It happened Saturday afternoon on Hastings Street near Columbia Street. Early this year, the VPD launched a beefed-up policing presence in the neighbourhood challenged by open drug use and street disorder.

“Officers saw the man allegedly shove the elderly woman, who was using a walker for mobility,” said VPD Sgt. Adam Donaldson in a statement. “The woman fell to the ground and suffered a cut to her forehead.”

A person was arrested while paramedics were still treating the woman for her injuries. She was taken to hospital and is expected to make a full recovery.

“Proactive policing works,” said Donaldson. “In the absence of video evidence capturing the incident, the next best thing was the officers’ observations, which led to a swift arrest.”

Felix Harris, 40, has been charged with assault.
