Flamingos head coach, Akeem Busari has revealed that Nigeria’s opening defeat to Poland served as a wake-up call for his team at the ongoing 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup.
Nigeria began their campaign with a 2-1 loss to Poland but bounced back in impressive fashion, securing victories over Puerto Rico and defending champions North Korea to book their place in the Round of 16.
The Flamingos finished second in Group B behind North Korea, who topped the standings on goal difference.
Busari admitted that the defeat to Poland came as a major shock, especially considering the team’s impressive run of form before the tournament.
“The loss to Poland was a shocker. It has been the only match I have lost since I took over this team,” Busari said.
“We played over 20 friendly matches without losing and won all four qualifying matches.”
