Phuket crash kills Russian biker Ilia Eid, 29, after his Triumph strikes a Mercedes-Benz. Police question the driver and investigate a possible U-turn. Across Thailand, motorcycles account for four in five road deaths, as tourist casualties mount.

Russian motorcyclist Ilia Eid, 29, was killed in a violent collision with a Mercedes-Benz on Phuket’s bypass road on Thursday night. Police are probing reports of high speed and a possible U-turn. Meanwhile, Thailand’s deadly road toll continues, with nearly 50 people killed daily, most on motorcycles. Foreign tourists are dying at a rate exceeding two per week, with 91 killed by October 5 this year. Road safety experts estimate that 80% of foreign tourist fatalities involve rented motorcycles. Investigators have yet to establish responsibility for the Russian’s death.

A 29-year-old Russian motorcyclist was killed on Thursday night when his powerful Triumph motorcycle slammed into a Mercedes-Benz on Phuket’s bypass road. Ilia Eid, from St Petersburg, died at the scene after the violent collision.

Meanwhile, police are investigating reports that the Mercedes-Benz was making a U-turn when the motorcycle struck its rear. The crash left the Triumph wrecked and the car extensively damaged. Investigators have yet to establish responsibility.

The fatal accident occurred at approximately 8.37 pm on November 5 along Chaloem Phra Kiat Rama IX Road in Ratsada, Mueang Phuket district. Initial accounts suggest Eid was travelling at high speed before striking the black Mercedes-Benz.

Police find Russian dead beside wrecked Triumph as Mercedes-Benz driver faces questions over crash

However, police have not confirmed his speed or established the precise movements of either vehicle. The collision occurred on a major thoroughfare carrying traffic around Phuket Town.

Police Lieutenant Panya Chaiwichit, an investigating officer at Mueang Phuket Police Station, received notification of the crash. He subsequently alerted Police Colonel Chatree Chukaew, superintendent of Mueang Phuket Police Station. Officers were dispatched to the scene, where they found the Russian lying beside the road with severe injuries. Eid was already dead when police arrived.

Nearby lay his badly damaged yellow Triumph motorcycle, bearing Phuket registration plates. The black Mercedes-Benz sedan, registered in Bangkok, had sustained substantial damage to its rear. In particular, the vehicle’s left-hand rear had been badly battered. The driver remained at the scene as officers began examining the wreckage and gathering evidence.

The Mercedes-Benz driver was identified as Patcharin Potjanartkomol, a 45-year-old Thai woman living in Phuket. She remained available for questioning and provided information to investigators. However, police have not announced any criminal charges against her. Neither have they established whether either motorist breached traffic regulations before the collision.

High-speed collision and possible U-turn under scrutiny as Phuket police examine CCTV and vehicle damage

The moments immediately preceding the impact remain central to the investigation. One account indicates that Eid struck the Mercedes-Benz from behind while travelling at high speed.

Separately, another account suggests the car was executing a U-turn when the motorcycle collided with it. Police have not confirmed that version of events or established the precise position of the Mercedes-Benz.

Investigators are examining the vehicles’ positions, collision damage and available CCTV footage. Their immediate task is to reconstruct the movements of both vehicles before the crash. Specifically, officers must establish whether the Mercedes-Benz was turning, slowing or travelling along the road when struck. The motorcycle’s approach and speed are also under examination.

Although initial accounts describe high-speed riding, investigators have not released a confirmed speed estimate. The extensive damage to both vehicles indicates a substantial impact. Nevertheless, that evidence alone does not establish the motorcycle’s speed or determine responsibility. Police must also establish the sequence of events immediately before the collision.

Unverified claims about Russian rider emerge as doctors examine body and police continue crash inquiry

In parallel, social media users claiming to live near the accident scene have accused the Russian of regularly riding at excessive speeds. Some also complained about motorcycle noise in the area.

However, police have not verified those allegations or established any connection with Thursday’s crash. The claims remain separate from the official investigation and have not been substantiated.

A forensic physician from Vachira Phuket Hospital attended the scene to examine the deceased. The preliminary examination attributed Eid’s death to injuries sustained in the collision. One account placed the time of death at approximately 9 pm.

However, officers had already discovered him dead when they arrived. No detailed autopsy findings have been released.

Rescue workers from the Kusoldharm Phuket Foundation subsequently transported his body to Vachira Phuket Hospital. The precise injuries responsible for his death have not been publicly identified. At the same time, police continued gathering evidence concerning the collision. Any further legal action will depend on the investigation’s findings.

Russian victim’s background remains unclear as two other foreign motorcyclists die in October crashes

Eid was identified as a Russian national from St Petersburg. However, his occupation and length of stay in Thailand remain unknown. It is also unclear whether he owned or rented the yellow Triumph motorcycle.

Police have released no confirmed information concerning his immigration status or family circumstances. Likewise, there has been no official confirmation concerning notification of his relatives or involvement by the Russian Embassy.

The available information does not establish whether Eid was visiting Phuket as a tourist or living on the island. Nonetheless, his death adds to a series of fatal motorcycle accidents involving foreign nationals in Thailand. Two other foreign motorcyclists died in separate incidents during October, including another Russian national killed in Pattaya.

On October 7, a Filipino motorcyclist was killed in Phuket when a lorry struck his motorcycle. The rider had reportedly stopped at a pedestrian crossing when the collision occurred. Eight days later, another fatal motorcycle accident claimed the life of a Russian national in Pattaya. The circumstances of the two accidents were different.

Russian dies in Pattaya motorcycle crash as Thai road deaths approach 50 daily, with riders worst hit

On October 15, a 37-year-old Russian man died following a motorcycle accident on Sukhumvit Road in Pattaya. He reportedly lost control of his motorcycle before striking a central reservation. The impact threw him against a tree, killing him. The incident preceded Eid’s death in Phuket by three weeks.

Thailand continues to record approximately 50 road deaths daily, according to World Health Organisation estimates. Motorcyclists account for the overwhelming majority of fatalities.

The WHO estimated 18,218 road deaths nationwide during 2021, equivalent to almost 50 people every day. Notably, its figures indicated that motorcyclists accounted for 83.8% of those deaths.

Thailand’s estimated road fatality rate stood at 25.4 deaths per 100,000 population. The figures place motorcycle riders at the centre of the country’s road casualty statistics. Importantly, the frequently quoted figure of 50 deaths daily covers all road users, rather than motorcyclists alone.

More recent national figures reveal a similar picture. In June 2025, Department of Disease Control Director-General Dr Panumas Yanawetsakul released figures covering road fatalities during 2024. The department recorded 17,447 deaths, including 14,144 involving motorcycles. Consequently, motorcycle fatalities accounted for approximately 81.1% of Thailand’s recorded road deaths that year.

Motorcycles account for four in five Thai road deaths as foreign tourist fatalities top two each week

That represents an average of almost 39 motorcycle deaths every day. By comparison, the overall road death toll averaged nearly 48 fatalities daily. The figures distinguish motorcycle fatalities from the broader national death toll. They also confirm that approximately four out of every five people killed on Thai roads were motorcycle riders.

Foreign visitors also feature prominently in Thailand’s road casualty records. Figures from the Road Accident Victims Protection Company show that 116 foreign tourists died in road accidents during 2025. That represents an average of 2.23 deaths per week, with more than two overseas visitors killed every week. Another 14,269 foreign tourists were injured during the same year.

Crucially, those figures cover all road accidents involving foreign tourists, rather than motorcycle collisions alone. Nevertheless, motorcycle accidents account for a substantial proportion of foreign visitor fatalities. The casualty figures also include pedestrians and other road users involved in fatal accidents.

The death toll has continued throughout 2026. By October 5, the Road Accident Victims Protection Company had recorded another 91 foreign tourist deaths. A further 9,668 overseas visitors had been injured. The figures cover the first 278 days of the year and provide a direct comparison with the previous annual total.

Foreign tourist road deaths head towards 120 in 2026 as rented motorcycles dominate fatalities

The 2026 figures represent approximately 2.29 foreign tourist deaths weekly during the period covered. On that basis, the annual death toll would approach 120 if the recorded rate continued through December. That would place the total slightly above the 116 fatalities recorded in 2025. However, the available statistics do not support an annual average of three deaths weekly.

The figures show that foreign tourist fatalities remained above two per week during both reporting periods. Furthermore, the 2026 weekly average was slightly higher than the figure recorded throughout 2025. The latest statistics also show that thousands of foreign visitors continue to suffer injuries in road accidents annually.

Dr Thanapong Jinwong, manager of Thailand’s Road Safety Academic Centre, has identified rented motorcycles as a major factor in foreign visitor fatalities. He estimated that approximately 80% of foreign tourists killed in road accidents had been riding rented motorcycles. Another 10% of foreign tourist road fatalities involved pedestrians, including visitors struck while crossing roads.

These proportions are reported estimates rather than an individually audited breakdown of every fatality during 2025 and 2026. Even so, the figures establish the substantial involvement of motorcycles in fatal accidents affecting overseas visitors. They do not establish whether Eid’s Triumph was rented or privately owned.

Phuket police examine possible U-turn and motorcycle speed as fatal crash inquiry remains unresolved

Nor do the national statistics determine the circumstances surrounding his death on Thursday night. Investigators have not established whether excessive speed, a U-turn or another traffic movement caused the collision. The Mercedes-Benz driver’s account and the available physical evidence remain central to the inquiry.

For police in Phuket, the investigation remains focused on the Mercedes-Benz driver’s movements and the Russian motorcyclist’s approach. Officers are examining physical evidence, vehicle damage and available CCTV footage.

They must establish the sequence of events immediately before the impact and determine whether either motorist breached traffic regulations.

The reported U-turn remains unconfirmed. Likewise, no verified speed estimate has been released for the Triumph motorcycle. Police have also made no public finding that either motorist was responsible for the accident. The Mercedes-Benz driver, Patcharin Potjanartkomol, has been identified and questioned. There has been no announcement of her arrest or prosecution.

Eid’s body was taken to Vachira Phuket Hospital following the preliminary forensic examination. However, no detailed autopsy findings or official confirmation concerning his relatives have been made public. As of Saturday, November 7, police had announced neither charges nor a final finding concerning the collision that killed the 29-year-old Russian from St. Petersburg.
