Watch: Why Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys Might Never Get Married
Keri Russell plans to have Matthew Rhys as her forever partner in crime, but calling him husband one day isn’t likely.
Although the couple has been together for nearly 13 years, the Diplomat actress—who was previously married to Shane Deary from 2007 to 2014—doesn’t feel the need to tie the knot with Rhys.
“I’ve had a big party,” Russell explained on the Oct. 8 episode of Chelsea Handler‘s Dear Chelsea podcast. “I get to dress up all the time. And I know for a lot of people, marriage is something different.”
“People used to have to be married to have a credit card,” she continued. “We can have credit cards now. I don’t need my last name to go away.”
As she emphasized, “I’m cool. If you want to be here, be here. If you don’t, that’s cool too.”
But while the 50-year-old and partner aren’t married by law, that doesn’t mean they don’t have a long-term commitment in place. After all, Russell and Rhys share son Sam, 10.
“P.S., we have kids, so that’s forever,” Russell—also mom to son River, 19, and daughter Willa, 14, with ex Deary—emphasized. “To me, it’s antiquated.”
Though the Waitress star and Widow’s Bay actor first met in 2002, they didn’t reconnect until 10 years later, on the set of The Americans, in which they played married KGB intelligence officers.

And shortly after Russell’s separation from Deary in 2013, she and Rhys sparked romance rumors, later confirming their relationship. While they haven’t tied the knot, the pair have addressed the possibility on more than one occasion over the years.
Last year, Rhys put it simply, telling The Times, “we literally haven’t got round to marriage yet.”
