Watch: Why Joe Amabile Is Running NYC Marathon Just 3 Months After Brain Surgery
Joe Amabile is hitting the ground running after brain surgery. Quite literally.
In fact, the Bachelor Nation alum plans to participate in the New York City marathon on Nov. 1, just three months after undergoing brain surgery to remove a blueberry-sized lesion.
“Once, I had decided to have the surgery, it was kind of all I could think about,” Amabile explained to E! News in an exclusive interview. “I wanted to focus on something positive and it, it helped me so much to put my mindset, not just on focusing on the surgery, because a lot of it was just out of my hands, and the marathon is something that I can control.”
Indeed, while much of the population will never run a marathon, let alone after undergoing such a massive procedure, it was a no brainer—pun intended—for the 40-year-old.
“Just giving myself that control back—it like kept me in a positive mindset,” he said, “which I think is so important, especially when you’re going into brain surgery. It makes recovery that much easier.”
In fact, having a finish line in mind is part of the reason he’s partnered up with Northwestern Mutual ahead of the marathon.
“I think when it comes to financial planning, it’s so important to set a goal,” he explained. “And me setting a goal for the marathon just lined up perfectly with Northwestern Mutual. And it’s not a sprint, it is a marathon, but you could still set short-term goals and achieve those goals and same with long-term.”
As for making the decision to run, he of course made sure to clear it with his team of doctors, especially his oncologist.

“I just asked, ‘Do you think I’ll be able to run the marathon?’” Amabile recalled. “And she said, ‘I don’t think I could ever run a marathon, but you should be good to go.’”
He explained that in terms of recovery, he could “pretty much go back to doing anything” after two months, though any lifting of weights or objects over 70 pounds had to wait until the three-month benchmark.
Despite the green light, however, Amabile—married to fellow Bachelor Nation alum Serena Pitt—has adjusted his training regimen before his third 26.2-mile trek. Where he’s followed a strict, intense schedule for his other races, this time he’s making sure to stop and smell the roses.
“I am keeping my runs down to like a max of five miles and two a week,” he explained, adding, “I actually think I’m gonna be in a better spot this year because I’m going to have way more rest.”
As for race day, “I’m gonna try to enjoy it much more than I have in the past,” he said. “Like, really take it in because it’s a great day. The energy’s amazing.”

In fact, everything is in full bloom for Amabile these days.
“I feel great,” he said of his recovery. “Like, if I woke up this morning and you told me I never had brain surgery, I would believe you. That’s how I feel. I mean, there are certain nights where I feel a little off and I get tired. But other than that, I can’t complain.”
And that is thanks, in part, to Pitt’s support over these months.
“I couldn’t be more proud or just impressed with the way she’s handled everything,” he emphasized. “I think regardless, we would have been strong, but I feel like we’re unbreakable at this point.”
