    Watch: Why Emmys 2026 Is on Monday, Not Sunday

    The 2026 Emmys is being punted to a different day this year.

    While entertainment award shows are traditionally held on Sunday nights, the 2026 Emmys ceremony is jumping ahead 24 hours to Monday, Sept. 14.

    But why is TV’s big night taking place on a different day than usual? The reason has to do with two things: the Cowboys and the Giants. 

    This year, NBC and Peacock hold the rights to air the 78th Emmys ceremony under the soon-to-expire “wheel deal,” which is a longstanding broadcast agreement between the four major networks—ABC, NBC, CBS and FOX—to rotate airing the ceremony annually and pay $8.25 million in license fees, per Variety. But both NBC and Peacock are also home to NFL Sunday Night Football.

    And since the Dallas Cowboys were scheduled to play the New York Giants on Sunday, Sept. 13, the Emmys were pushed to Monday so the network and the streaming platform could air both.

    NBC most recently aired the Emmys in 2022 and 2017, with both occurring on Monday nights to avoid a scheduling conflict with Sunday Night Football.

    Emmys 2026 Nominations: Snubs and Surprises

    As for the 2026 Emmy Awards, the ceremony kicks off at 8 p.m. ET, 5 p.m PT on Monday, Sept. 14, and will be hosted by Law & Order: Special Victims Unit icon Mariska Hargitay.

    Despite her nearly 30 years on the NBC crime drama, Hargitay admitted she was initially hesitant to accept the Emmys hosting gig, telling Variety in August, “At first I thought, ‘This is ridiculously thankless—a difficult job that everyone gets ripped apart for. Why? Why would I do that?’” 

    And though she was planning to take a break from the cameras, the 62-year-old decided to go for it.

    “It was just the biggest wrench in the works,” Hargitay shared. “And then I thought about why I love television. Television, in my opinion, is extraordinarily healing.” 

    So, can fans expect her to channel Olivia Benson at the show?

    “We’ve had five amazing ideas just for the opening,” she teased, before cryptically noting, “I’ve always wanted to do ‘SVU: The Musical.’”

    Matthew Rhys, Widow’s Bay & The Beast in MeAfter being nominated for both Lead Actor in a Comedy Series and Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie, Rhys shared, “Thank you to the TV Academy for nominations for both WIDOW’S BAY and THE BEAST IN ME.     Brett Goldstein, Shrinking“Ahhhhhhhhhh get the fxxx outta here!” the funny man joked of his Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy recognition. “This is so cool. What an absolute list of stone-cold legends to be a part of. So proud of my Shrinking family they are all so fxxxing good and it’s so lovely to see so many of them recognised by the academy. Proud to be a part of this thank you thank you thank you.”

    Carrie Coon, The Gilded Age“I am honored to be recognized in a very tough category,” the Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama nominee reacted, “but more importantly, I am so proud of our remarkable company and the best crew in New York for their hard work, both lavish and subtle, which yielded eight nominations for The Gilded Age today—our most ever!”
