It won’t have come as a surprise to Liverpool fans that Dominik Szoboszlai was named as one of the club’s new vice-captains by head coach Andoni Iraola on the eve of the Premier League season.
The role at Anfield was vacant after the exit of Andy Robertson earlier this year, and the Basque decided to share the responsibility among three players rather than just one, with Alisson Becker and Joe Gomez also appointed as deputy skippers to Virgil van Dijk.

The Hungarian midfielder had already served as captain of his country for nearly four years, and he was one of precious few LFC players to perform consistently well during a nightmarish 2025/26 campaign.

The 25-year-old had spoken in recent months of his readiness to take on added responsibility at Liverpool, having now had three full seasons with the Merseyside giants, and it seems that Iraola was clearly listening (even though he was still in charge of Bournemouth at the time).

There are different types of leaders on a football pitch – some are constantly vocal and issuing instructions on the pitch (like Van Dijk); others tend to be more reserved and lead by example rather than verbally.
Szoboszlai falls into the latter category, having consistently stepped up on big occasions for the Reds last season, particularly with his penchant for long-range free kicks (as Arsenal, Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur would testify).
With 13 goals in all competitions, he was our second highest scorer for the campaign after Hugo Ekitike, and the Hungarian has begun 2026/27 in a similarly promising vein.
When Liverpool were awarded a penalty deep into stoppage time away to Newcastle in Iraola’s first competitive game, they were trailing 2-1 at the time. Up stepped our number 8 to assume the responsibility and finish to the net to rescue a point.

He also netted a timely equaliser shortly before the interval against Atletico Madrid in our first Champions League match of the season, with that goal settling the Reds as they went on to triumph 2-1 at Anfield.
Szoboszlai has also proven his value to the team by playing out of position at right-back in our hour of need, deputising in that role in recent months when Jeremie Frimpong and Conor Bradley have been unavailable.
Even though the Hungarian admitted that it isn’t his favourite position, his readiness to do a job for the collective good serves to underline why he was an inevitable choice as one of our new vice-captains.
If this is to be Van Dijk’s final year at Liverpool, the 25-year-old midfielder would seem to be at the front of the queue to take over the captaincy on a full-time basis.
