Canada has a ways to go to be considered a soccer nation, but expectations are as high as they’ve ever been entering the 2026 World Cup.

Les Rouges open their tournament Friday in Toronto against Bosnia and Herzegovina and will make history just by stepping on the pitch as they play their first World Cup match on home soil. Coach Jesse Marsch’s team will want much more than that, though. Canada has only appeared in two prior World Cups, in 1986 and 2022, and come away with three defeats in three games each time.
While Canada didn’t have to go through the qualification process for World Cup 2026, it showed its growth at the 2025 CONCACAF Gold Cup, winning its group before bowing out in the quarterfinals with a penalty shootout loss to Guatemala.
The core of that team will carry the banner in this tournament, with Jonathan David leading the way up front. Captain Alphonso Davies will miss the opening game as he continues to recover from a hamstring injury but Canada is hoping to get him back soon.
Bosnia and Herzegovina, which will provide the opposition Friday, is making its second World Cup appearance. National talisman Edin Dzeko leads his side even at age 40 and will try to recapture some of the magic the Dragons conjured in their previous appearance in 2014. Dzeko was a goal-scorer in a 3-1 defeat of Iran to close group play in Brazil after Bosnia suffered narrow one-goal defeats to Nigeria and Argentina in its first two matches.
