Host West Virginia, Wake Forest and Kentucky all enter the postseason ranked in the top 40 in RPI, and the Demon Deacons and Wildcats will both like their chances of taking out the No. 16 national seed and reaching the super regionals. They have to deal with one another first, though, and will face off in the opening game Friday.
Wake (38-19) had mixed results against a tough ACC and non-conference schedule but will enter NCAA play battle-tested, at least. The Deacs’ offense features plenty of weapons, led by sophomore Luke Costello (1.146 OPS, 17 HR, 61 RBIs), and 2026 MLB Draft prospects Kade Lewis (1.060 OPS, 13 HR, 55 RBIs) and Dalton Wentz (1.017 OPS, 17 HR, 51 RBIs). Ace Chris Levonas has been stellar as well, posting a 10-3 record and 2.90 ERA with 110 strikeouts in just 68.1 innings.
Kentucky (31-21) will counter with a lineup led by shortstop Tyler Bell (1.119 OPS, 7 HR, 10 SB), who has recovered from an opening-day shoulder injury that sidelined him for nearly a month and is expected to be a first-round pick in this year’s MLB Draft. The Wildcats don’t have a ton of power but they steal a lot of bases and create havoc for opposing defenses.
It should be a fascinating matchup Friday in West Virginia. Here’s all you need to know to tune in.
