The UNC football team will spend its weekend in New England, hoping for a return to the winning column in its final non-conference game.
On Saturday, Nov. 7 at 12 p.m. ET, North Carolina will kick off against the UConn Huskies. The Tar Heels (4-4, 2-3 ACC) and Huskies (4-4) each need two more wins to reach bowl eligibility, so Saturday’s stakes will be higher than any ordinary non-conference matchup.

UNC sits at .500, despite playing two of the country’s top teams in Notre Dame and Miami (FL) close throughout. North Carolina arguably looked better than the Hurricanes during Halloween’s 38-35 loss, but a late fumble and consecutive, onside kick penalties doomed any chances of a historic upset.
UConn is playing its first season in the post-Jim Mora era, largely dominating against lesser competition in each win. The Huskies have a questionable loss to Maryland on their schedule, plus defeats against Syracuse (31-30), Miami Ohio (24-21) and Air Force (35-26). The Huskies are a run-heavy team, which could spell trouble for the Tar Heels’ struggling defense.
A strong pass-rush gave UNC’s defense an identity through its first several games, but that’s now virtually non-existent. North Carolina’s offense is starting to play high-level football, but a team can only score so many points before its defense has to start making stops.

Just four games stand between North Carolina and the end of its 2026 season. If the Tar Heels win twice more, they’ll play in a bowl game for the first time since 2024.
UNC’s next opponent, UConn, also needs two more wins to reach bowl eligibility. Sure, you could call this just another meaningless non-conference matchup, but don’t tell the Tar Heels and Huskies that.

North Carolina’s offense is playing too good to lose, despite the defense failing to generate much of anything. The Huskies will run all over UNC, which gets the close win in a high-scoring affair.
