Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy announced today that special elections will be scheduled to fill the seats of Rep. Mikie Sherrill (D-NJ), who resigned to assume the governorship of New Jersey, and Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA), whose surprise resignation last week has sent shockwaves through the Republican caucus.
“These vacancies put our slim majority in a precarious position as we head into a critical midterm election year,” said House Majority Leader Steve Scalise. Both parties are already mobilizing significant resources for the upcoming special elections, with the New Jersey seat seen as a potential battleground.
