It’s time to vote for The News Leader’s Athlete of the Week for April 6-11.
The News Leader staff, with input from coaches and fans, nominate the athletes. Then, every Monday, we open the polls and let readers select the top athlete in The News Leader coverage area from the previous week. The poll remains open through Friday at 5 p.m. The winner is announced Saturday.

This week’s nominees:
Sarah Piner broke the Riverheads school record in the discus, throwing 118 feet, 9.5 inches at a track meet Saturday, April 11. The previous record was 114 feet, 6 inches. The sophomore was also third in shot put at 33-feet, 10 inches.
Elissa Caricofe had a grand slam and a double in four plate appearances, knocking in six runs for Buffalo Gap in a 13-3 win over Alleghany on Thursday, April 9. Caricofe’s homer came with bases loaded in the fifth, driving in four runs.

Nolan Deaver was 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs and three runs scored in Wilson Memorial’s 12-1 win over Fort Defiance Tuesday, April 7.
Livia Clinedinst tied her teammate, Taylor Cubbage, for first in the high jump at 5-feet, 4 inches at a track meet Saturday, April 11. The junior also finished third in the 100 hurdles and helped her 4×400 team finish third.
Freshman Alexis Waite scored four goals and an assist for Stuarts Draft girls soccer in a pair of wins, 8-0 over Alleghany Tuesday, April 7 and and 3-2 over Staunton Thursday, April 9.

Skylar Sloat won the pole vault in a track meet Saturday, April 11. The junior had a vault of 9-feet, 7 inches. She also was third in the triple jump.
