Two teens hit with fines of more than $700 for operating electric vehicles that are illegal in Mission

Two teenagers on electric rides — one on an e-scooter, the other on an e-motorbike — were caught speeding on video by Mission RCMP, and fleeing once they spotted the pursuit.

An officer on traffic duty spotted the two teens speed past his parking spot on Cedar Street in Mission and attempted to pull over the scooter and motorbike, but the teens made a dangerous escape, though only for a short while.

The 16-year-old scooter rider seen swerving in the road and the 15-year-old on the motorbike were soon identified and fined.

The offences that were identified included: Speeding in a playground zone, failing to stop for police, driving without consideration, no driver’s licence, no insurance, failure to wear a required helmet, and operating an electric kick scooter outside a cycle lane. The total fine issued to each teen was over $700.

Parents of children under 16 can also be fined if they are caught riding these vehicles.

Both vehicles are illegal to operate on the streets or sidewalks in Mission. Neither rider was wearing a helmet.

A licence or insurance is not required for an e-scooter in B.C., but you do need to be at least 16 years old to operate or ride one, and must adhere to the same rules of the road motor vehicles do. Helmets are also legally required.

B.C. is in year three of a four-year project that permits electric kick scooters in participating municipalities — the key word being “participating.” Mission is just one of many Lower Mainland and Sunshine Coast municipalities which have banned their use.
