A Victoria police officer has been charged with sexual assault after an independent investigation into an off-duty incident.

The Victoria Police Department (VicPD) announced the charge against Const. Chris Kayiatos after an external investigation led by West Shore RCMP, a detachment in Greater Victoria.

In April 2025, VicPD was contacted by a third-party agency about an alleged sexual assault involving one of its members. West Shore RCMP was immediately put in charge of the investigation.

“From the outset, VicPD has fully co-operated with all investigative requests, recognizing the seriousness of the allegation and the importance of maintaining public trust,” said a VicPD spokesperson in a statement issued Friday.

The Office of the Police Complaint Commissioner (OPCC) was also notified.

VicPD was recently informed that the B.C. Prosecution Service has approved a sexual assault charge against Kayiatos.

The constable has been suspended and his duty status will continually be reviewed and assessed.

“Allegations of this nature are deeply concerning and do not reflect the standards of professionalism and conduct expected of VicPD members,” said Chief Const. Fiona Wilson. “At the same time, it is important that the judicial process be allowed to proceed independently and fairly. We remain committed to accountability, transparency, and ensuring all allegations are treated with the seriousness they deserve.”

Wilson said the officer “is entitled to the presumption of innocence until proven guilty in a court of law.”
