I feel like I’m repeating myself but, again, it’s a musical month for Vancouver-area theatre. With Kimberly Akimbo and Shrek The Musical just ending, Singers in a Smoky Room, Grease, Gunmetal Blues and three of North America’s most popular musicals take the stage. More sober fare can also be had along with a couple of modern classic revivals. Don’t miss these shows in May.

In a month light on serious theatrical storytelling, Itai Erdal’s meditation on Israel, Palestine and his own experience in the Israeli army shouldn’t be missed. Vancouver theatre’s premier lighting designer for decades, Erdal has become a master of the solo play. Winner of a prestigious Edinburgh Fringe award, Soldiers of Tomorrow, co-written with Colleen Murphy and performed by Erdal, is a harrowing act of conscience.

The first time I reviewed the Legally Blonde musical more than a decade ago, I called it “sexist, silly, and riddled with stereotypes but also funny, clever, and utterly delightful.” The show has continued to grow on me since. Every production I’ve seen has been big fun and I expect nothing less from Metro Theatre, which has upped its game substantially this season. Christopher King directs with Celeste Nicholson as Elle Wood.

Rarely do we see revivals of Canadian theatrical classics. David French’s Newfoundland romance, set shortly after the First World War, was one of the most produced and celebrated Canadian plays of the 1980s. Devoted to providing opportunities for older artists, Western Gold Theatre has cast senior actors Craig March and Dolores Drake, both native Newfoundlanders, as the play’s teenage lovers. Michael Fera directs.

Here’s another lightweight musical that couldn’t be more fun. I doubt that anyone reading this hasn’t already seen the movie or play or both, but ABBA’s music is so addictive and the show so insanely popular that you’ll probably want to see it again (and sing along and dance in the aisles). The usually first-class Broadway Across Canada production will likely sell out despite hefty ticket prices.
