Vancouver-shot horror film Backrooms just became the largest-grossing film for the Canadian film distributor Elevation Pictures.

After this weekend’s ticket numbers were counted, Backrooms, which was released May 29, had $14.8 million in sales in Canada and a whopping US$301 million in worldwide sales. The film is also the top-grossing movie for the U.S. studio and distributor A24.

Reports estimate it will likely earn around $340 million in its worldwide theatrical run.

Produced by Vancouver’s Chris Ferguson (Longlegs and The Monkey) and made with a budget of $10 million, the movie by 21-year-old American director Kane Parsons has broken into the all-time top 25 highest-grossing horror films list, coming in at No. 21.

The film, which has an 87 per cent rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the popular online review-aggregation website for film and television, follows aspiring architect Clark (Chiwetel Ejiofor), now a struggling furniture store owner, who discovers a portal to a terrifying, mazelike dimension. As he explores this supernatural space, his therapist Mary (Renate Reinsve) and his employees are pulled into the strange and very creepy world.
