B.C. designer Dorothy Grant won big at this year’s Canadian Arts & Fashion Awards (CAFA).

The Tsawwassen-based designer, who is considered a pioneer in B.C.’s fashion industry, was awarded the inaugural Indigenous Fashion Award for her work in creating, preserving and uplifting cultural designs and talents.

The event, which took place Thursday night in Montreal, celebrates the talents across the Canadian fashion landscape spanning categories such as photography, styling, modelling and more.

This is the first year the event has introduced an Indigenous Fashion Award.

Grant was one of a handful of talents to be honoured in special categories. Additional award recipients included: fashion journalist and author Tim Blanks for the Vanguard Award; Groupe Dynamite entrepreneur Andrew Lutfy for the Outstanding Achievement Award; designer Sophie Theallet with the International Canadian Designer Award; and supermodel and advocate Coco Rocha with the Changemaker Award.

“Tonight, we celebrated excellence,” said CAFA co-founder and president, Vicky Milner, in a news release. “We are proud to recognize your achievements and look forward to the remarkable paths that lie ahead.”

Grant’s designs will be the centrepiece of an upcoming exhibit at the Alaska State Museum in Juneau called Dorothy Grant’s Retrospective Exhibition — Raven Comes Full Circle, which celebrates her 40-plus year-career. The exhibit was first curated by the Haida Gwaii Museum in Skidegate.
