President Trump on Sunday said Iran will be “laughing no longer” as he continues to hammer out the framework for a peace proposal with Tehran.
“For 47 years the Iranians have been ‘tapping’ us along, keeping us waiting, killing our people with their roadside bombs, destroying protests, and recently wiping out 42,000 innocent, unarmed protestors, and laughing at our now GREAT AGAIN Country. They will be laughing no longer!” Trump wrote in a Truth Social post on Sunday.
The message comes as Iranian state media reported that Tehran submitted its response to the U.S. peace proposal through Pakistan, who has been serving as a mediator throughout the conflict.
Reports have said the objective is to work toward a short-term agreement that would pause fighting for another 30 days and end Iran’s blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, according to The New York Times, citing Iranian officials.
Other outlets reported this week that the Trump administration is also seeking a moratorium on Iranian nuclear enrichment in exchange for the U.S. lifting sanctions and releasing billions in frozen Iranian funds.
Despite efforts toward peace, Energy Secretary Chris Wright on Sunday said the U.S. is waiting on a “clear resolution” during an interview on NBC News’s “Meet the Press.”
For now, the Strait of Hormuz, a critical shipping waterway, is seeing limited commercial traffic, and U.S. and Iranian forces are continuing to trade fire in the Persian Gulf.
On Sunday, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian signaled a willingness to engage in talks but vowed against “surrender” or “retreat.”
“We will never bow our heads before the enemy, and if talk of dialogue or negotiation arises, it does not mean surrender or retreat,” Pezeshkian wrote on the social platform X. “Rather, the goal is to uphold the rights of the Iranian nation and to defend national interests with resolute strength.”
